Sheriff Dennis WALKER sought an Attorney General ruling on carrying handguns by part time deputies assigned to private property for the Juneteenth Celebration. Three Mexia Fire Department units responded to a fire at the Ada Benson home in the 1100 block of East Titus at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. The wood frame house had three rooms gutted but most of the structure was saved. Fire origin suspected to be electrical problems. Assistant Chief Donald Holmes noted strong turnout of regular and volunteer firefighters.

Mexia police reported one arrest yesterday on a Jefferson County parole violation. Troy Chambers Jr was arrested and taken to Limestone County jail for transfer to the Texas Department of Corrections. Two new officers are in training for the Mexia Police Department, Richard Hawthorne and Douglass Jones, who will attend basic training later this year.
Mexia Chapter No. 131 Royal Arch Masons will hold a 7 p.m. stated convocation to elect officers for the year. Immediately after, Mexia Council No. 77 Royal and Select Masters will elect its officers at a following stated assembly. Companions are urged to attend.

The ASPCA keeps Harvey the attack rabbit at its Manhattan offices to deter burglars. Harvey, an adult gray and white rabbit, bit six people before being observed by the Department of Health and returned to the ASPCA. He is not up for adoption and may remain on premises for protection.
Texas Attorney General John Hill calls Governor Dolph Briscoe's energy policy statements irresponsible while Briscoe says he has not begun to fight. Hill accuses Briscoe of lacking influence with the Carter administration and urges a united Texas front to present a solid case to Congress and the president. Hill hedges on a run for governor after the legislative session ends.
National Safety Council data show rural areas bear two thirds of motor vehicle deaths while urban areas account for pedestrians. Insurance stats cite one car in ten involved in a yearly crash. In 1976 fatalities reached 47,100 nationwide with over 1,800,000 disabled. Limestone County averaged seven local fatalities annually with about forty injuries per death.

Nationally the Highway Users Federation reports about 20 billion dollars yearly in medical expenses, lost earnings, production, and property damage. Texas totals reach 1,290 million dollars or 155 per vehicle, vs 144 nationally and 159 in the West South Central states. Limestone County with 7,750 cars incurs about 1,201,000 dollars annually. Government urge stricter 55 mph enforcement and support for belt laws or air bags in cars built after September 1980.
In Texas last year six times as many men as women drowned. The Parks and Wildlife Department recorded 503 drownings with 436 male and 67 female victims. Among 60 children under five, 41 were boys and 19 were girls.
The Limestone County Extension Service and the Limestone Falls Soil and Water Conservation District invite the public to a beaver trapping demonstration at 1:30 p.m. June 7 at the Richland Creek Watershed Structure on the Margaret Revis farm, Billy McReynolds owner, nine miles northwest of Coolidge.
