UN planes bombed Elisabethville and the mining town of Kolwezi as UN forces launched an offensive against Tshombe troops in the Congo. Rebels faced air strikes and ground actions in a bid to seize control amid fighting reports from Elisabethville.
U N troops tighten control around the Katanga capital Elisabethville after two mornings of air raids and ground fighting. Tshombe reportedly fled his palace as UN forces cleared roadblocks and occupied central posts. Reports say heavy fighting along the Kipushi road continued as Tshombe reportedly fled toward a southern village near Elisabethville. James Marion Winn 81 of Marquez, a lifelong rancher and farmer, died recently. Surviving are four daughters including Eula Copeland, a son Weldon Winn, three sisters, four brothers, 26 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.
