Medal of Honor Winner Honored by His Hometown
In Saugerties New York about 4000 residents braved 24 degree weather to greet Captain Roger H C Denton the first Medal of Honor recipient from South Vietnam. The town closed stores filled the auditorium and hosted a 1000 seat reception. Gifts included a baton from his junior drum corps a life membership in the volunteer fire department plaques from veterans groups and a 200 dollar savings bond. Denton wounded four times at Camp Nam Dong July 6 led a defense and earned the Medal of Honor from President Johnson December 5.
