Governor Miriam A. Ferguson commuted the death sentence of William Langhorn to life imprisonment for the slaying of Veloria Zapelac, a La Grange high school girl, killed nearly a year ago while attempting to protect her sister Minnie from an assault.
Dallas dispatch reports Miss Eleanor Burns, 22, caretaker at a maternity home, moved with 19 babies after mothers left for Christmas parties. Police tracked her to Oklahoma City while frantic mothers, whose children were two to five weeks old, harassed officers and operators seeking their infants.
After two days off for Christmas the Wildcats restart activity amid rainy season challenges. Cleaver No 1 of Texas Company nears 3300 feet with test at 3180 feet and chalk entry at 2585 feet. Twenty four crew members of the French bark Eugene Schneider were reported lost after a collision with the Liverpool steamer Burutu about 30 miles west of the Isle of Wight. Four Barkentine sailors were rescued by the Burutu.
Gail Cannon county attorney elect married Miss Lucille Scharff daughter of Mrs. Louie Scharff of Groesbeck. The couple surprised friends Sunday and left for Dallas to stay the week. They will reside in Groesbeck. Cannon is noted as a prominent family member and a top young lawyer.
Washington reports Representative Clyde Kelly plans to introduce a resolution when Congress reconvenes to investigate charges that Ty Cobb and Speaker conspired to throw a 1919 baseball game. Kelly argues Congress can act under the Interstate Commerce Act despite a court ruling denying baseball as commerce.
Mrs May Chipps testified in Fort Worth before Judge Gossett in a $150000 damage suit filed by D E Chipps Jr against Dr J Frank Norris for the death of his father, slain in Norris study at First Baptist Church. She described marital discord including drinking and mental cruelty but said Chipps did not abuse her or utter profane language constantly. Mayor Meacham and others were to testify as depositions continued.
The Baptist Sunday School drew 410 attendees despite inclement weather. Pastor Dr. John A. Held preached both services. A Wednesday evening program marks the thirtieth wedding anniversary celebration for Dr. and Mrs. Weld with a special program planned.
Meet Russell C. Wood described as a youthful Beau Brummel of the U S Secret Service. He becomes bodyguard to the President's son John Coolidge at Amherst College succeeding Colonel Edward W Starling. Wood is expected to keep pace with Coolidge in extra curricular activities.
Fort Worth police report an unmasked bandit stole Christmas Eve receipts over $5,600 from the Clarence Saunders stores. H. Menick, the Fort Worth store manager, was seized during a collecting tour and forced to drive to the city edge where the robber took the money and the automobile.
After Christmas, an active west and northwest oil campaign tests parallel structures into Navarro and Hill counties. Wells near Wortham and across Limestone County line are nearing completion with new tests planned west of Hill County. The Thompson area reports wells producing over 300 barrels daily as Moss Keys and Urschel reach 2,825 feet.
Twin boys were delivered at the home of Mr and Mrs Jay Weiser Christmas Eve night at midnight. Mr Weiser is proprietor of Jay's Cafe. The notice records a birth with the couple named and the location given.
Mexia enjoyed the calmest Christmas in history with only 10 arrests for fights drunkenness and reckless driving. Fire department ambulances were unused and there were no deaths over the weekend, aside from one restaurant disturbance requiring a few arrests.
D B Shelton of Lamar county arrives to assume duties as Freestone county agent succeeding W B Fredericks who retires for a post with Superior Mills in San Antonio. Fredericks will move his family to San Antonio and focus on Southwest Texas travel. Shelton comes with endorsement from A M College extension service district agent G W Orms and is a dirt farmer who graduated from A M College in 1924.
Special to The News from Thornton reports Rev. Hubert C. Smith, formerly of Irene, assigned to Thornton replacing Rev. Keener. The change was made by Rev. A W Hall, Corsicana district presiding elder. Keener has been ill and moved his family to Rice.
Notice from Fairfield announced incorporation of the Freestone County Telephone company with headquarters in Fairfield. E D Simpkins owner states the name will stay the same.
Magnolia company is drilling a deep test on the Marshall near Rice now at 3000 feet. The firm holds thousands of leased acres in a region favorable for shallow production. A Marnelia Stroud well shows around 900 feet with a gas show, while other operators like Moss, Keys and Ursehel push toward completion depths in nearby districts with three producers recently added.
A series of blasts wrecked the General Petroleum Company absorption plant near Ventura California and set tanks on fire. Several workers were injured and about fifteen of 400 employees were hospitalized while four more were still missing in the fear they were dead.
W. E. Hesler aged 56, long time worker in the state land office, died suddenly at his desk in Austin this morning. The death was caused by heart disease.
Austin reports former Wichita Falls mayor Frank Collier, jailed three years for manslaughter in his son-in-law Elaie Robertson's death on Feb 14 1925, received a full pardon. Mrs Collier, serving ten years for murder in the same case, was pardoned in November. Jurors and over 400 signatories urged clemency.
Washington reports the Diaz government suffered a defeat at Pearl Lagoon as U S troops withdrew to Falst Bluff and El Bluff after leaving their dead. The State Department says the United States has no plan to send an army or intervene in Nicaragua's civil war.
