Three letters from Mexia Texas children request gifts for Christmas. Bradley Gamble asks for a gun set, truck, tricycle, boots, clothes, fruit and candy and asks Santa to bring his mother something so she won t cry. Binus Jackson IV requests many items including a gun set, boots, cash register, watch guitar hat gloves and a western outfit. Bettye Jean Gamble asks for a doll doll house pant suits a music box or piano a stroller and boots for Christmas.
A collection of handwritten letters from several children and guardians listing Christmas gifts they hope to receive. Items include dolls, toy guns, wagons, a Roy Rogers set, a drum, a piano, clothing, a dollhouse, furniture, candy, fruit, and more, with notes asking Santa to also bring something for mothers, brothers, sisters, and teachers. Names include Bettye Jean Gamble, Nathaniel Gamble Jr, Binusa Astrid Jackson, Thelma Jean Gamble Pear, Corey Demarcus Williams, and Sonya Maria Eldridge, all from Teague Texas area.
GM announces two recalls totaling about 22 000 new cars to fix possible brake and suspension defects. About 12 700 are Chevrolet Nova Pontiac Ventura Oldsmobile Omega and Buick Apollo models with U belt issues risking rear-spring loss and wheel lock. The other recall covers about 9 200 standard Chevrolet wagons built at the Tarrytown plant for a rear brake line replacement.
Governor Dolph Briscoe named Kenneth May of Lubbock and E E Stuessy of Austin to six year terms on the North Texas State University board of regents. May replaces Ernest Schur and Stuessy replaces C Dean Davis. Briscoe also named Robert Hardy of Huntsville and A W Cullum of Dallas to the Trinity River Authority, replacing Arthur C Spencer and Ben Carpenter.
The Supreme Court upheld a three year old law allowing individuals to block sexually explicit ads from their mailboxes, likening it to barring unwanted salesmen. Courts found the protection constitutional despite press freedom limits and ruled penalties apply only when criminal intent exists.
