Secretary of the Interior Douglas McKay opened 6 400 acres near Fairbanks Alaska for immediate public land law applications. An additional 4 000 acres will be subdivided into home cabin and business sites by order of the Anchorage area administrator.
Thirty nine Teague High School vocational agriculture students and their instructor J E Wells visited Point Enterprise to learn about community improvement. Ray McGee spoke on peach development and Mrs McGee presented contest reports while McGee Dowdy and the Reverend Benson guided a community tour.
A 1 600 foot wildcat well is planned eight miles west of Mexia in the old Nigger Creek field by L and Kelton Jr of Corsicana. The No 1 Etta Richardson well will target the Nacatech formation and sit 690 feet from the south and 1 200 feet from the east lines of a 100 acre tract in the P Varal survey. Dallas Rep Walie Judd and World Literacy director Dr Frank Laubach will speak at the first world mission conference of the Baptist General Convention of Texas.

Izvestia reports the firing squad execution of Viktor Abakumov AG Leonov and V I Komorov with M Likhachev for crimes against the state. Two conspirators I A Chernov and M Broverman receive 15 to 25 years in prison. Beria’s downfall noted as anniversary of his death.
The Soviet Union agreed to return 27 small naval craft loaned by the United States under the World War II lend lease program next summer. The State Department announced the decision in Washington. The Edison Hotel in New York advised guests that room service would provide a fully decorated Christmas tree during the holiday week.
In Budapest MTI reports Noel and Herta Field, American citizens, were granted political asylum by the Hungarian People’s Republic. The Fields had been missing since 1949 and were freed from prison on November 16. Noel had been in Czechoslovakia collecting material when he vanished.
Washington sources say Communist party lawyers will ask the Supreme Court to hear their challenge to the McCarran Act ruling upholding the anticommunist security law. The 2 to 1 appeals court decision held the party is Moscow controlled and must register with the government. Joseph Forer called the ruling completely wrong and said an appeal would follow. Ships sail north to south through the Panama Canal.
In 1954 Mexia saw a TV surge with nearly 600 sets sold amid growing reception and rising interest. Dealers warn outlook depends on color broadcasts and continued sales. Prices range from 100 for used sets to over 1 000 for console-tower units, with most sales on installment and few repossessions.
Thunderous blasts wrecked fireworks stands in Highlands and Luling near Houston as two boys were hurt. James Brig, 43, suffered serious burns at Luling and Rex Thorn, 14, was lightly burned and treated before release. Fire damage at Highlands totaled about 150 dollars. no injuries among the proprietor Raymond James or unnamed youths.
Sen. George D. Aiken predicts brighter times for farmers citing research education and new markets as key factors. He doubts major changes in the Republican farm program under a Democratic Congress and says farm price declines are leveling off. It costs 7200 dollars to launch a loaded B 47 jet bomber from the runway.

Ambrose Nugent a 44 year old Wisconsin native and career soldier stationed at Fort Sill Lawton Oklahoma is charged with helping Communist captors during 38 months in a North Korean prison camp and will be court martialed January 11 Arthur Cavanagh Nugents civilian attorney said Nugent was ordered to be ready for trial though Fort Sill officials made no formal announcement.
Herbert C. Upton of Milford Michigan was held for return to Michigan to face bad check charges. He was arrested at Gladewater Texas while wearing high heels painted fingernails and a blouse and skirt after a woman complained she would room with him once she learned his sex.
