A reader recalls a Sunday in Dallas marred by crowded streets and confusing one way routes around the railroad station. He laments parking restrictions and praises some progress while noting a need for clearer traffic planning.
Marine sergeant Eugene McDermott on Christmas leave hurled an incendiary grenade into a West Side bar injuring 13. An off duty policeman shot and killed him after a seven block pursuit. Patrolman Vincent Beckles was wounded. McDermott’s motive remains undetermined.
A large crowd attended the Calvary Baptist Training Union Christmas program Sunday evening. Bobby Parker wrote the script, Rev. Howard Smith directed the music, Odell Smith arranged lighting, and cast members included Ault Exmond Candiett Leonard Pelton Ed Tucker and Mrs Odell Studie. The program was presented under the church chair.
Mr and Mrs Bill Murphy won first prize in the Christmas home decoration contest sponsored by the LaBelle Maison club for the Mexia Chamber of Commerce. Their Groesbeck highway home featured a Santa Claus sleigh on a snowlike roof with elaborate lighting. Second place went to North Ross and third to Mrs Billie Ward 713 East Main Street. First prize was $25 with $5 for second. honorable mention went to Dr W L Carrington 82 East Tyler Street Frank Ruth 609 South Hoss and Jim Fuller Groesbeck.
In Reyno Arkansas two bandits wearing fine dress aided by pistols robbed the Farmers and Merchants Bank near noon. They escaped with more than thirty thousand dollars after locking three bank employees in the vault. State patrol units were sent to block roads as deputies and witnesses described a bold daytime heist with a protruding eyes suspect noted.
Lebanese Sea Captain B Radwan piloted a motor launch through a gale to reach the wrecked Champollion cruise liner off Beirut. He made three trips, saving about 50 people each run while 17 crewmen died and many passengers leaped into the sea. All crew members were later rescued as the ship broke up.
American warplanes blasted a vast Communist troop center near Chaeryong in northeast Korea destroying 40 buildings. The raid followed P80 Shooting Stars striking a Red air base at Pyongyang and disrupting a leaflet campaign over Allied front lines.
The Texas Public Safety report shows 240 killed and 5 139 injured in November with a total of 16 631 accidents. The month marked a drop from 258 deaths recorded the previous year.
Cities Service Oil reports a new oil well spudded two miles west of Wortham in Limestone County. The well aims to reach the Travis Peak sand at about 5000 feet depth, targeting production in the northwest corner of the county.
President Vincent Auriol accepted the resignation of Premier Antoine Pinay after failed talks to save his budget and the franc. Pinay, discouraged by opposition in the National Assembly, quit early morning, leaving France without a budget and fearing a renewed devaluation amid an international crisis.
In Memphis Tennessee Bill White aged 33 and Mrs Mary Kelly aged 27 were fined 98 dollars after officer J R Riales complained that the couple kissed repeatedly in moving and stationary cars, blocking traffic for blocks. White paid 77 dollars and Mrs Kelly 11 dollars.
Services are set at Christ Episcopal Church tomorrow evening with Rev. John Holt of Austin leading. Holt will conduct Christmas carols at 11 30 p m and a midnight communion mass. public invited.
Cpl Murray from Tulsa Oklahoma and Casper Skudlark of Avon Michigan joined Gen Eisenhower for a bleak Korean hillside lunch during the president-elects visit. The trio drew reporters attention and quiet responses when questioned after the meal as they recalled the moment.
President-elect Eisenhower trims schedule to host three of John Eisenhower’s grandchildren from Highland Falls New York. John Roosevelt son of Franklin D Roosevelt visits, praises cabinet picks, notes party affiliation remains uncertain.
Mexico City dispatch reports former New York Mayor William O Dwyer is embittered as Sloan Simpson, his estranged wife, seeks a divorce. O Dwyer resigned as ambassador to Mexico on December 6 and has denied pursuing a Mexican divorce. The couple previously faced divorce speculation while Simpson remains in Acapulco with her mother.
The Weather Bureau reports temperatures already dipping, with 20s in North and West Texas and mild conditions in East and South Central Texas. Panhandle readings show winter’s official debut, while travel disruptions and flight cancellations affect the holiday rush as a storm system crosses the region.
CHICAGO UP An estimated 590 persons may die in traffic accidents during the four day Christmas holiday, the National Safety Council said. The council recommended a safety plan for all to reduce incidents.
The 87th casualty from the C-124 Globemaster crash at Larson AFB Washington died in Brooke Army Hospital San Antonio. Liacerye M. Sgt. Wendell L. Burton 31 Temple Okla was one of nine flown to Brooke for severe burns. Three other burn victims remain in critical condition. Investigators found no cause to ground Globemaster transports.
In Wilila, three youngsters aged 11 months 3 and 2 perished in a blaze that gutted the tenement where they lived. Believed residents include Mr and Mrs Daniel Fleming. Neighbors saw Mrs Fleming nearby as the fire broke out. Officials have not yet determined a cause.
