A brief tornado swept through Mexia yesterday morning striking Glendale and Hopkins streets. It leveled a chimney at the Wadle home and ripped garage roofs and attic fans while uprooting trees. About $100 damage was reported at the Barnes residence. no injuries were logged. Telephone and electric lines remained undamaged.
Jim Tatum's 31000 damage suit against the Southern Pacific inroad was expected to go to the jury this afternoon after jurors heard Judge H Fountain Kirby's charge yesterday. The trial paused for a Christmas program and resumed with closing arguments from Norton Fox for Tatum and L L Geren for the railroad.
Local firms fund three chartered buses to shuttle the Mexia pep squad and Black Cat band to Abilene for the Class A state championship game against Littlefield. They will depart 5:30 from the band house, with arrival expected around 11:30, and will perform Anchors Away and Auld Lang Syne before returning.
Amarillo reporting Dwight Hoskins once top high school football star faced a 35 year sentence after a 24 hour jury deliberation found him guilty of murder in the October 6 robbery linked shooting of a crippled service station attendant. A gasoline-fed blaze destroyed a flimsy tenant home in the Fairbanks area near Houston, killing a Black mother and four children early today. The tragedy leaves the family of five dead and residents shaken as investigators probe the cause of the fire.

Clayton Brooks of Thornton area selected by Limestone Falls Soil Conservation supervisors as outstanding soil conservation farmer candidate for Texas contest now in its fifth year. Brooks previously won Fiesta de Mexia soil conservation contest. nomination includes his father as group nominee. Radio station WFAA also nominated for service to soil conservation for promoting Fiesta de Mexia contest. Prizes total 13000 dollars with 1060 for best group and 500 for outstanding farmer. event attended by local officials from Prairie Hill Shiloh Ben Hur Thornton Bryan and Mexia areas.
More than 500 Black Cat fans from Mexia plan to travel to Abilene for the state championship game Monday. Ticket sales show 225 adult tickets sold and bus tickets moving slowly at the Red Cross office, while student sales rise to about 50 as principal Carroll Wood notes limited remaining buyers. Student sales end tomorrow evening, with adult and bus ticket sales ending at 4 p.m. Saturday.

A Thornton man, Bud Jackson, was arrested by federal state and local authorities after a tip led to the discovery of a whiskey still six miles east of Thornton. Officers destroyed mash gear and seized sugar and whiskey as evidence, with Jackson slated for U S court action in Waco and transfer to a federal jail in Marlin. Sheriff Green said Jackson aimed to cook at 9 30 that morning. the raid followed a four hour stakeout before dawn.

Cub Pack 224 held a Christmas party for about 35 Cubs and parents in the McKenzie Motor lobby. Doris Theus Marian Barnes Wanda Lamusky sang carols, Dickey Hitt played accordion, and Santa distributed gifts. Den Mother committee headed by Mrs Ragland organized the event. McKINNEY UP A plane missing on a night flight from Dallas was found crashed on a farm near McKinney. Three occupants, all from Dallas, died. Victims named H J Happel CLOW Heatey and W J Crawley. Wreckage of a Cessna not burning, four persons aboard total. Police report and search planes continued as weather was poor in Oklahoma and Texas.
