The city and school board consider a unit system of taxation for municipalities and school districts. The plan, already adopted in several Texas towns, promises lower taxes and value equalization. It uses a Unit Foot Method to set land values and offers public charts and indices for real estate markets.
Austin dispatch reports Miss Fannie Daniel of Austin named by Gov. Miriam A. Ferguson to fill the vacancy left by E. J. Crocker resignation. Daniel becomes the first woman in the post, with a background as 1920 labor department secretary and other state service. Ferguson and Crocker affair also noted with Crocker pleading guilty to affray and intoxication charges.
Oklahoma City report says three or four victims were hospitalized after a midnight motorcycle crash involving two men and two women on a single machine. They collided with an automobile. two women and a male escort were critically hurt and another sustained internal injuries.
Mexia reports record sales across toys dolls radios and gifts with weeks to go. Salvation Army notes peak Christmas baskets efforts. Merchants call it a mechanical Christmas as families flood shops with heavy buying from five cent toys to cars. Dolls remain popular with stores selling thousands, fireworks planned, and Santa Claus headquarters drawing thousands from nearby towns.
Weather hampered oil field activity this week as operators delayed or halted tests across Mexia Powell and Navasota regions. Several wells advanced before year end, with new drills planned in 1927, while a fatal gas blowout occurred at Bayshore No1 in PAMPA.
Special music is announced for Sunday at the First Methodist Church with soloists Mrs. Frank E. McMillan and James Pruett performing.
W B Landrum and David Murphy are the four minute speakers announced for Sundays services at the First Methodist church. They will address the program of the year highlighting activities for all ages and members. Landrum speaks at Sunday school and evening service while Murphy speaks for the Board of Stewards at the 11 o'clock morning service.
Mexia Chamber of Commerce road committee blames Bramer and Wilder contractors for delays on the Mexia Shiloh road. They cite failure to secure railroad transport from the Tehuacana quarry, arguing rail service would save taxpayers thousands. They allege edited spots on the road hinder travel and accuse opponents of using the issue to attack the chamber.
A water tank from the roof crashed through a four story candy factory in Philadelphia, killing one woman and injuring five others while two more are believed dead among the buried workers. Fire crews and rescuers search the rubble.
Public school children collected and turned over to the Salvation Army more than 400 cans of fruit and canned goods, jars of preserves, potatoes, apples, oranges, popcorn, pecans and other items. Captain Parker and the Salvation Army praise the community for brightening holiday tables and spirits.
Kenneth G. Ormiston, missing witness and co defendant in the Aimee Semple McPherson case, had bail cut from 10000 to 2500 in Los Angeles Superior Court. He surrendered at the district attorney’s office and posted bail, with arraignment set for December 27. He arrived Friday night to vindicate Mrs. McPherson and said he was not at Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Santa Lous Fellowing special w Struction i Santa L Walkup builds a new sleigh for the children’s Patron Saint with Mexia Shrine Club aiding. A big tree will be set on Sherman street near the post office where the sleigh will be shown and city children entertained Friday evening.
Earthquake rocks Lizbon causing continued tremors through the afternoon. At 3 p.m. the aftershocks kept residents on alert as officials assessed damage and safety.
At the Thursday Rotary luncheon Captain Z H Parker and his Salvation Army workers presented a 30 minute program recounting two years of relief work. He told a tale of aiding a destitute oil field family and a starving child with syrup, inspiring donations totaling about $100 from a quiet member and noting prior generous gifts in Christmas charity efforts.
During cleanup at Cerf No 1 E L Smith Oil Co in the Powell field the old well flowed by Friday afternoon. Estimated output is about 600 barrels. It ranks among the first wells in the Powell pool and overflow prompted new lease provisions.
A baby boy weighing nine and a half pounds was born at 10 a m Saturday to Mr and Mrs 0 R Beardon of Lufkin Texas. Beardon formerly managed the Western Union office in Mexia and Mrs Beardon, formerly Miss Zora Boyd, lived with her uncle W K Boyd in Mexia at the time of marriage. Both families have many friends in Mexia.
Waco Tiger beat Oak Cliff Leopards 20 to 7 before at least 15 000 spectators in the 1986 Class A Texas high school football race. Kathcart Pruitt and Rathcart scored for Waco with Meadows delivering a key long run and punt return. Lumpkin led Oak Cliff with several gains but failed to match Waco’s spark in a game marked by defensive stands and late scoring.
