The Student Council plans a candy sale to raise money for a college loan fund helping students needing extra education funds. A chocolate almond bar will be sold for 50 cents, with canvassing in town on Thursday night to solicit buyers for this worthwhile project.
The Black Cats beat Iola 44 to 42 in their Buffalo tournament opener showing improved play. Joe Gwens led with 14 points while Joe Ed New scored 30 and Don Foley added 9 as Wortham’s team built momentum from a 46 to 27 prior win.
Members of the Mexia State School Library Club received a Friday afternoon party from Mrs. Cecil Ellis' Home and Family Living class. The students made leather tooled comb cases with initials for all twenty five members and refreshments were served. The Alhambra in Granada Spain is noted with a circumference of 2% miles.
Mexia High School reports 315 students in grades nine to twelve with a 93 percent attendance rate for the first two six weeks. Sophomores lead at 95 percent, juniors 93, seniors 92, and freshmen 91.6 percent. Junior High enrollment stands at 147 with 76 in the eighth grade and 71 in the seventh, noting a 92.8 percent attendance for the second six weeks and an average daily attendance of 130.64 for the first six weeks.
Fifty five Mexia High School FFA boys conducted a school clothing drive visiting about 1500 Mexia and rural homes. Seven truckloads of used clothing were collected, with an amusing note about a student mispronouncing his school collection visit to a local resident.
The Black Cats lost their second game of the Buffalo tournament to Grapeland 45 45 in a late burst deciding the winner. Mexia's Dox Foley led with 21 points and Grapeland's Platt had 14 as Mexia and Grapeland split scoring. The team advances next to Ennis to face St Johns on December 27.
Charles R Ramsden world traveler scientist musician and lecturer presented an assembly on Friday December 13. He demonstrated effects with his electronic Novator producing train organ animal sounds and more and played the ukulele as a small orchestra. Jimmy Kirgan assisted during the show including handling a geiger counter while Ramsden showcased radioactive air.
Annual semi formal dance invites students 80 and older? admission fifty cents. Proceeds support Student Council projects. Event set for 8 P M December 21 at Ross Avenue Elementary School.

H L Lee of 523 North Red River is a patient at John Seely hospital in Galveston. Mr and Mrs J L Schuster of Fort Collins Colorado will stay through Christmas with their parents Mr and Mrs Mike Schuster and Mr and Mrs D W Needham. Nee Lee Roy Bridges of Corpus Christi has visited his father H T Bridges. Bridges will accompany him home Wednesday for the holidays.
Seventeen Mexia High School students were inducted into the William Wallace Mason Jr Chapter of the National Honor Society during an assembly on December 12. The chapter now totals 56 members, with four returning from the 1956 57 class. Initiation featured a piano prelude, hymns, an invocation, and talks on the four NHS principles by Derrel Wall Jacquelyn Spencer Max Hines and Noah Newen.
Mexia High School will run a week of Christmas themed activities December 16 to 20. The annual Christmas program by the Mexia High School Choir is set for Friday during assembly with formal robe singing in the final portion. Records will play at lunch, and homerooms host parties Friday with gift exchanges. The Junior High party is Friday night. Other events include dances by Student Council at Ross Avenue, Nurses' Club at H. E. Cottage, a Band party, and a Sophomore Class dance.
The Future Nurse Club will sponsor a semi formal dance Friday at the Homecoming Cottage starting at 7 30 p m and ending at 2 30 a m No charge for admission. Future nurses and their guests will attend and others are invited.
Members of the Future Nurses Club of Mexiat High School plan a party for the Nurses Aids at Mexia State School on December 17. They meet at 6 30 p m at the elementary school and travel as a group to the state school for refreshments gifts and Christmas carols.
