Mexia sees its coldest spell in over a year with sub freezing mornings. Weather observer Miss Josie Newman logged 23 degrees after a 40 degree high, while officials note no water line damage calls and forecast cooler, then warming conditions.</s>
Lawmen from county state and federal agencies raided a hidden whiskey still in Limestone County near Prairie View seven to eight miles east of Thornton. No arrests were made yet officers destroyed the still after hours of concealment and delays, pouring out over 100 gallons of cookable moonshine and 10 gallons of finished product, with 12 barrels and copper gear seized.
Funeral services were held at the First Methodist church in Teague for R. E. Bob Lynch who died at the Teague hospital. The Rev Loyd Williams officiated with burial in Greenwood cemetery. Military rites were given at the grave. Lynch was a Hale Park-O-Meter representative of Oklahoma City and formerly on the Dallas Morning News advertising staff. He is survived by his wife Roma Lynch of Teague, daughter Ann Scott Lynch, mother Mrs R E Lynch of Dallas, brother John Lynch and three nephews. He was a World War II veteran and had lived near Teague for several years.
Robert Keatts, a leading Negro citizen of Mexia, is named deputy tax assessor collector to receive poll taxes. He will operate a collection office at the Dorsey Keatts Funeral Home, 211 North Belknap, through January 31. The final day to pay this year's poll taxes is January 31 to be eligible to vote in 1953 elections, with the appointment made with the county commissioners' consent.
Two bandits tied City Marshal Leonard Cates and looted Mt Ida Arkansas, netting about $15,000 after four safes were cracked. State Police joined the search as dawn broke and the men fled the town before 4 30 a m.
A blaze destroyed two buildings housing six Bonham businesses and an upstairs hotel. One hotel guest was feared burned to death as authorities said the fire likely started in a service station garage and was out of control by the time alarms sounded.

A 20 year old Mexia youth, Sam Jackson, suffered a back injury and dental damage in a three car crash just north of Waco around 1 30 a m on Sunday. He was treated at Providence hospital while X rays were taken. Other Mexia residents involved included Billy Duncan Laurence Davis Max Fletcher Betty Jean Tull Patsy Martin and Mary Grote. Drivers were Booker T Halliburton of Waco and Duane W Brown of Camp Wolters. No charges were filed and cause of the crash was not known.
President Truman cautions Americans not to let fear of Communism erode liberties at home as he dedicates a shrine to the Declaration, Constitution, and Bill of Rights in the National Archives. Chief Justice Vinson attends the ceremony with other dignitaries. The documents will be housed in a bomb and fireproof repository for protection against time and atomic war.
Texas Republicans launched a statewide effort to win courthouse posts as a path to broader victory. At a morning session GOP leaders urged county and precinct organization statewide while national committeeman Jack Porter touted Eisenhower’s Texas gains and predicted at least two Congress seats. He claimed superior organization over Democrats and urged patronage focus for Ike voters. Official returns showed Eisenhower leading with 33,936,285 votes out of 61,621,529 nationwide, Stevenson trailing with 47,313,217.
Mexia PTA at Ross Elementary presents a dramatized Christmas story with music titled Christmas Truant. Sixth and seventh grades of Mexia Elementary perform under directors Miss Ellie Hughes and LeRoy Thomas. PTA president Mrs H R Martin says a business meeting precedes the program. admission is free and open to the public.
Charles E. Brown a 46 year old San Francisco attorney is charged with conspiracy to commit murder for allegedly hiring a young assassin to kill his wealthy wife of eight months. Held without bail with Victory L. Stoner 24 a San Diego truck driver as the alleged hireling. The text notes a separate unrelated line defining scuttling a ship.
Decatur Texas promotes its nickname Eighter from Decatur with 12 by 16 foot billboards declaring the county seat of Wise. Mayor L. Hardwick notes the phrase, rooted in a World War I cowhand’s Texas drawl, is now a local emblem and even a business name.

Mexia Chamber of Commerce directors and their wives join the State School committee for a 7 pm banquet in the employes’ dining hall. Mrs Howard Wooton oversees meals at the Mexia State School and Home as President Jack McKinnie leads the monthly meeting. The program includes Christmas carols by the State School chorus directed by Mrs W A Phillips.
Mrs Norman Sterling Miller, daughter of late Texas governor Ross S Sterling, died at a Houston hospital Sunday. Funeral services were held this afternoon. While her father was governor she became the only woman ever to marry in the governor's mansion in Austin.

Carson City Nevada UP reports screen star Lana Turner obtained a speedy Nevada divorce from Henry J. Bob Topping after a 10 minute court hearing charging mental cruelty. The marriage began in April 1948 with a lavish Hollywood wedding and ends her third marriage after three marriages and divorces.
Evangelist Ochoa from New York City, a former Catholic priest, will speak tomorrow night at 7 30 at the Milam Street Church of Christ in Mexia. Pink A Bates notes the subject will be Communism Catholicism and Christianity and invites all. Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanack is cited as the most famous American almanac.
