A red three story hotel called the Star Arms was swept by a roaring blaze on Fort Worth’s south fringe early today killing three people and forcing about 32 evacuees from the building. The victims include Mrs. Hattie McCrosky 83 mother of the night clerk James Burton Shearer 34 from Pantex Carson County and an unidentified man about 250 pounds. Firemen reported the man’s burns were not severe. Seven other deaths were reported in two highway accidents raising the weekend toll to at least 11. An 11 year old Handley dairy hand James Qlin Smith was found strangled in a dry creek bed near Crowley. An 18 year old Lackland Air Force Base airman Larry Mehaetky was killed when a pistol went off in his hand. U S Air Force officers investigated a raging barracks fire in Rapid City that killed five officers and injured six others. The other officer deaths were not identified pending next of kin notices.
A deadly Pacific storm with high winds rain and snow killed at least eight people across California and Oregon. A possible crashed airplane near Tahoe City is feared missing, while a C-47 wreck on Mt. San Gorgonio hinders rescue attempts. Burial Sunday follows funeral at Ferguson Cemetery Limestone County for Mrs. Hattie B. Richardson 70 of Houston died Saturday. Rev Charles Fake and Rev Olen Waldrip led services with Riddle Funeral Home Mexia in charge. She born May 28 1682 in Limestone County and survived by children grandchildren and great grandchildren.
