Winecoff Hotel Fire Claims 122 in Atlanta Disaster

A massive blaze at the Winecoff Hotel on Peachtree Street Atlanta killed at least 122 people. The fire began between 3 and 4 a.m. on the fifth floor and spread rapidly through 15 stories. Fire crews struggled to control the flames as victims were carried to Grady Hospital and private mortuaries.

Santa Claus Visits Mexia with Candy Parade

Santa Claus rode through Mexia Friday in an open truck, candy for children, led by Boss McKenzie and the Mexia Black Cat Band. The Mexia Fire Department truck accompanied the visitor as crowds along Commerce Street watched the parade and Chamber of Commerce volunteers handed out more sweets. Santa thanked Mexia children and promised to return to fill stockings at Christmas if behavior remains good.

The choir of twenty seventh and eighth graders directed by Miss Marilyn McGowan will perform Christmas selections including The Virgins Slumber Song Joy to the World Christmas Hymn Prayer Perfect Silent Night Gesu Bambino and more. The public is invited to attend this Christmas service. Automobile manufacturers believe tonight the end of the national coal strike will allow continued production at current levels.
