Azerbaijan reports a Cuban airliner crash off Bermuda killing 37 with 41 aboard, amid claims of a pre crash explosion. In Mexico a theater fire in Llavatierra traps hundreds, killing at least 414. Separate US incidents include a fatal highway crash near Huntsville with four dead and five injured, a Pittsburgh explosion that kills five siblings, a Jonesboro bus collision injuring 18, and a Dallas-Douglas homeowner burned to death.
Frost swept through the western Lower Rio Grande Valley causing considerable vegetable damage while warmer weather followed. Edinburg and McAllen dropped to 35 degrees as drought costs were estimated at 425 million dollars and crop losses across cotton livestock and grain sorghums were tallied in the three year span. Snow flurries lingered in northern mountains as storms raged in California and Nevada.
Ground breaking for the first Navy memorial to Pacific war dead will begin 11 years after Pearl Harbor attack. At 7 55 a m on Dec 7 National Commander Field L Ming of the Disabled American Veterans will turn the first spade for a 200000 monument near Pearl Harbor and Hickam Field. The coral colored concrete structure features four pylons and three meditative rooms and marks the Pacific War Memorial Commission effort with veterans groups.
Mil ton Boyd son of former Mexia residents Rayford and Mrs May died in a Houston hospital after a year’s illness. Funeral services were held Friday at the Methodist church in Tesrue and burial followed at Post Oak Cemetery near Donie with Ham Brothers Funeral Home of Teague in charge. He would have turned five on January 8. Survived by parents, grandparents from Donie and Teague, and an aunt Buster Chrisner.
Washington—President Truman and Mrs. Truman will travel to Independence Missouri by train Saturday night for the funeral of Mrs. David W. Wallace 90 mother of Mrs. Truman. Mrs. Wallace died Friday from cerebral thrombosis after years of decline. The Trumans and Margaret will accompany the body to Independence where private services will be held Monday. No flowers requested. Survivors include three sons Frank G George P Wallace of Independence and David F Wallace of Albuquerque plus grandchildren David F P Jr Marian Christine and Charlotte.
Eleven members of Mexia High School attended the annual meeting of the Texas High School Association, reporting to the school press on events and conventions.
Groesbeck Mexico livestock auction owners Irvin de Cordova and J F Jackson announce a special fat cattle sale set for December 9 in Groesbeck. Buyers from across Texas expected as current auction shows 400 head with prices down 1 to 3 per hundredweight for fat cattle and 50 cents to 1 for bulls and cows.

Tom Sealy of Midland will become chairman of the UT Board of Regents on December 31, succeeding Dudley K. Woodward of Dallas who resigned after a lengthy clash with the Texas Legislature. Woodward will remain on the board after eight years as chairman and critic of legislative actions.
Austin UP report states convicted murderer Lester Stevens, slated for the electric chair in Huntsville, received a last minute commutation to life imprisonment from Gov. Shivers following a recommendation from the parole board.
Basil O'Connor, head of the National Foundation, says a vaccine to prevent infantile paralysis may come soon. Gamma globulin used in Texas and Iowa shows temporary protection during the outbreak, but a long lasting vaccine is the goal. He noted $148 million spent in 15 years to aid polio patients.
