Farmers State Bank launches a community campaign in Mexia under the slogan I Like You. Merchants and town workers will wear red and white buttons to foster a friendlier, more connected downtown amid a busy daily pace. The effort follows readers’ interest in the newspaper ads and aims to boost local spirit.
Funeral services for Lydia Dancer Johnson will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church. The Rev. Robert Curry will officiate, with burial at Cancer Cemetery. Mrs. Johnson, born January 15, 1898 in Limestone County, resided in Rocky Crossing area and was a member of Little Wonder Court No 416 Heroines of Jericho. Survived by husband Otis Johnson, sister Christine Phillips, and brother Lee Dancer.
Delegates from First Methodist Church Mexia were selected to attend the Waco District Conference at Trinity Methodist Church in Waco starting 2 p.m. The 25th and Trice street church lists several named delegates and ex officio attendees including Mrs. John Sanders and Rev. C D Wooten. Reports cover the first six months of the annual conference year.
David Hyndman, 22, a Territorial Army bugler in Nottingham, blew his bugle while driving and was arrested by Constable John Bell. He pleaded innocent. Magistrate Arthur Dodd fined him 14 dollars while commending his enthusiasm.
Miss Lila T. Greene 71, longtime Mexia Spanish teacher in the 1920s and 30s, died Wednesday in a Houston hospital. Funeral was held Friday at First Baptist Church of Galena Park. Burial in Douglassville Cemetery. Survived by two sisters and two brothers.
Alvert D. Nelson, owner of 44 bed Nelson Nursing Home in Cleburne and 40 bed Nelson Nursing Home in Mexia, was elected first vice president of the Texas Nursing Home Association. He has long served on the association’s executive board and committees since entering the field in 1958.
The Mexia and Ross Elementary menus list daily items from corny dogs and mashed potatoes to barbecued burgers and Irish stew with milk and butter. The Pecos AP report notes a federal judge upheld the Stanton School Board's action regarding Negro teachers after consolidation and integration.
Duane Pope 22 failed to reach a verdict on his sanity after the first full day of deliberations in the Lincoln Nebraska case. Jurors weigh if Pope was sane at the time he killed three people and wounded a fourth during the $1 898 robbery of the Parker State Bank at Big Springs Nebraska on June 4. Pope, from Roxbury Kansas, admitted the killings and faces potential death penalty. U S district Judge Robert Van Pelt instructed jurors on the crucial issue.
Mrs. Rose Elis Rodgers, 46, died in a two car collision on U S 80 east of Abilene. The crash occurred early today involving another vehicle. Local authorities reported the fatality and ongoing investigation.
Cleveland Johnson of Coolidge will be buried in Salem cemetery after funeral services Sunday at 2 PM at Salem Baptist Church. He died in Houston and is survived by six sons and five daughters along with a sister and 17 grandchildren. burial by Dorchester-Keatts Funeral Home. Also noted: Texas drillers completed 108 oil wells in the first week per the Railroad Commission.
Several traffic accidents in Mexia caused high property damage. Paul Goodman of Groesbeck lost control on Highway 14 in a 198? Ford convertible and hit an embankment. Joyce Allen Barton of Teague collided at Commerce and McKinney with Eddie Chrisper in a 1965 Pontiac, damaging Barton’s car and a 1964 Chevrolet owned by Maxine Baker. Grover Smith’s 1958 Chevrolet pickup and Bessie Smith Bounds’ 1961 Buck collided at Highway 171 and 14, both southbound, with Patrolman Kenneth Blasingame investigating.
A Dallas resident with Texas ties to Mexia, John IL Richardson, visits his childhood home and recalls General Mexia’s land dealings in Limestone County. He is linked to Captain WH Richardson, an early Mexia merchant, and to the first barbed wire sale cited in The Wire That Fenced the West.
