Ernie Deane recalls a Thursday near-miss in Mexia when a private sedan and a school bus collided injuring 12 students and several adults. He urges enforcement of traffic laws along US 84 and near the elementary school, citing shared responsibility among city officials, school leaders, and drivers to prevent future injuries.
In Washington two McCarthy censure committee members urge January action to revise investigative rules. Sen Watkins and Sen Stennis advocate four changes from the committee report to curb hearings. Dallas reports Sen McClellan will run the subcommittee by Senate rules and disavows McCarthy’s breaches.
Nan nie L. Doss, who says she killed four husbands with arsenic, denies poisoning her mother Mrs. Louisa Halden Hazel. North Carolina authorities report vital organs strongly positive for arsenic. Hazel died January 8, 1953, after a visit from Doss. Doss is charged with murder in three prior husband deaths and denies responsibility for seven relatives. Coroner Dr. David Plummer says investigations may extend to two grandchildren.
Twelve boys and girls at Shiloh elementary earned the honor roll for the second six weeks of the first semester. First grade: Marilyn Bradley and Jerry Dean Masters. Second grade: Billie Gamble and Cheryl Jean Kubiak. Third grade: Charles Geox and Shirley Harrison. Fifth grade: Joe Glynn Lucas and Diane Collins. Sixth grade: Gary Sunday. Seventh grade: Ann Beene and Diane Ballard. Eighth grade: Jeanetie Campbell.
Mrs. Fay Smotherman died Friday when a car she rode in collided with a loaded school bus. Sixty passengers aboard the bus including 59 children were uninjured, though three children and her husband in the car suffered fractures.
New Orleans reports Democratic leaders scrapping the loyalty pledge tactic to place a national committee chair on state ballots. Front runners include James Finnegan and Michael V. Walter L. Norris of Mexia, now Midland, is featured in the Nov. 16 Texas Contractor with a photo and bio. A former Mexia High School graduate of 1944, he earned an architecture degree from Texas A&M and formed Pierce Norris McCutchen Pace and Associates in 1952. He helped design the Memorial Student Center at A&M and later oversaw Midland projects including the Woman’s Club, a radio TV facility, and a grocery store. Norris and his wife have daughter Ann. he belongs to the Lions Club Jaycees Masons and First Methodist Church.
Five children aged two to six died from suffocation in a tenement fire on Cleveland's east side. The blaze started Saturday in an illegally converted third floor unit housing 26 to 33 people.
Groesbeck Texas saw 1305 head sold at the weekly livestock sale as rain uncertainty and approaching holidays slow demand for stocker cattle. Prices ranged from 7 to 19.50 for calves and stockers, cows 5 to 11, bulls 8.50 to 12.25, dry cows 40 to 80, with accompanied calves fetching 60 to 125.
A semi-trailer loaded with explosives blew up while being filled with gasoline in Owatonna. The blast demolished the truck and the gasoline station, damaged a nearby two story building, and set fires in upstairs apartments. Authorities called it a miracle no one was hurt.
A notice on St. Michael's church door in New Haven England says the bishop dismissed the pastor Rev Richard Evans for being too friendly with a married woman. The 49 year old rector, married with five children, was seen chauffeuring Mrs Jean Finn in his car.

Communities are asked to stay free of accidents for 24 hours to show local responsibility and promote lasting safety measures.
Two adults and eleven students were injured when a private car collided with a Mexia school bus two miles west of town on U S 84. Mrs George Campbell suffered multiple fractures and cuts, Ricky Simmons aged six broke a thigh bone and injuries to mouth and tongue, both treated locally and in Waco hospitals. Bus driver and other occupants escaped serious harm. no firings reported.
Clark Jacobs becomes Limestone County engineer for the Road and Bridge Department effective January 1. A former Wortham resident, 37, he served three years with the U S Soil Conservation Service and recently passed the state exam to be a registered engineer. Jacobs has worked in flood control in San Antonio and is Texas A M graduate. He is father of two. Commissioners are Reynolds New McClinton and Rhodes.
Twenty two Limestone county students enroll for the fall semester at Texas A M College. The group includes seven Mexia residents and several others from Coolidge and nearby towns. Named students from Mexia are Joe Lynn Haney and six peers, while A M attendees include Charles Glynn Clay James Connely Allen Holton and others.
Local youngsters are reminded that letters to Santa Claus can be sent to the Mexia Daily News Post Office Box 431 Mexia Texas. Each letter will receive a reply from Santa. Include stamp addressed return, and the sender’s name and address clearly on the envelope.
Twenty two 4-H members from Limestone county will receive achievement medals at a Tuesday 7 p m ceremony in Ben Hur school auditorium. James Durham and Ruby Faye Kerley vie for the Gold Star as top overall 4-H participants after at least three years of club work.

Six people were killed and two injured when two cars collided near Robstown. Victims include Navy men from Kingsville Naval Air Station and residents of Caldwell Idaho Dallas and Robstown. Drivers James Raymond Brooks Caldwell and Shelton Edward Gray Kingsville died at the scene. Other dead: Ronald Lee Lane Dallas and Ed Williams Robstown.
