Colonel A E Humphreys, famed for oil water good roads, will speak at 7 30 PM in Westminster College Tehuacana urging support for Consolidated road district No 4 bonds due on the 16th. Local leaders say many residents will attend as Tehuacana backs the good roads effort.
Twelve fifty knot destroyers taken over by the United States Guard join the Atlantic Seaboard rum campaign. Eight more destroyers are being refurbished and 250 speed boats are nearly ready. By Christmas the guard's battle power will be mobilized under a $20 million appropriation.
Mrs. J. E. Leonard, wife of the Gas publisher, died late yesterday in Gainesville Texas after being struck by an automobile. United Press reports the incident occurred in the city with details limited to the fatal rundown.
Judge H E Bell of the Oil and Gas Division of the Texas Railroad Commission left town Tuesday morning after spending several days here to issue permits. He will return Tuesday.
The E L Smith Oil Company expanded in the Mexia area by buying 90 acres on the Lindley farm to build a tank farm three miles north of Mexia Limestone county. It placed orders for five 55s to support a rapid drilling program in the new Wortham district and to handle expected production. The company holds multiple leases and is active in Edwards Beall fields with rigs in progress and connections planned with Sinclair Pipe Line eight inch line.
A major oil deal closed near the Wortham field involves one half of the royalty on 268 acres north of the McCorkle lease in the Dodd farm. Buyers BD L Smith Oil Co Simms Oil Co and La Valla Co reportedly paid 160000 with half cash and half oil.
In December, the state penitentiary medical service department will be reorganized under Dr. J. T. Harrington of the prison supervisory staff at Saco.
Gov elect Miriam A. Ferguson has called a Dallas conference for December 11 and 12 to discuss highway, motor vehicle, and gasoline taxation matters. Invitations went to the highway commission judges county commissioners and members of the new legislature. This marks the second pre inauguration conference on subjects likely to lead to legislative action.
A chief medical officer will be employed. Prisoners will be sent to Huntsville or the Imperial farm before admission and, if their mental or physical condition warrants, will be segregated under the newly adopted rules.
The Community Power and Light Company launches a large expansion plan in Central East Texas with an estimated expenditure of about $3,000 daily for the next 30 days. Officials led by President Wiley F. Carl tour Mexia to inspect properties and discuss potential investments amid strong cotton and oil field prospects.
Mrs J K Hughes of Mexia, the area’s only woman operator, is expected to win her first producer within a week. She holds 8% acres on the Simmons tract northeast of the Simmons field, where Boyd Oil Company has made a gusher. Her wells are at various depths, with #1 down 2250 feet near Austin chalk, #2 around 1000 feet, #3 and #4 in development, and the lease highly valued by locals.
Zeno King, a local businessman, is seen as driving Mexia’s boom with ambitions for higher hotel room rates and expansion of the King Motor Company. His planned growth signals a larger, better future for the town despite current pricing.
A major winter storm blankets Nebraska with 8000 telegraph and telephone poles down, isolating small communities. Snow and sleet sweep Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and stretch into Texas Panhandle, Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma, disrupting railroad lines and wire service facilities.
State Penitentiary in Columbia reports the execution of Frank Harrell and Mortimer King for the murder of Major Samuel H. McCleary of the U S Army. Both men died in the electric chair after governors denied clemency with Harrell protesting that King acted as the actual killer.
H. L. Morgan, 42, arrested in Camden New Jersey on bigamy charges. He told officers he never married the woman he lived with, claiming his twin brother wed her. He said he began living with his sister in law as a joke and that she could not tell him from his brother. He was held to await further proceedings.
Washington dispatch reports Congress showing signs of opposing parts of Coolidge economic policy. A 57 million dollar surplus may be reduced this year and tax cuts are threatened. The House added 235000 for 89 land offices, contrary to the President’s recommendation to abolish them for economy, signaling expected friction as Interior bill debates resume.
New Wortham field northeast of Mexia now appears in Mid-Continent production tables with an initial 9000 barrels daily from two Boyd Oil Company wells. Colonel A. E. Humphreys reports plans to store excess oil under a Prairie contract and to build large tank farms near Mexia while expanding lines and leases across Shaestone County. Water supply remains the key challenge, with lines and dams planned to alleviate shortages.
Dr Hiram W Evans imperial wizard told a Waco Klan meeting that the Ku Klux Klan has no political ambitions and has grown nationally. Reports that the imperial palace would move from Atlanta were denied.
The J. K. Hughes Developing Co with headquarters in Mexia reports Crouch 1 drilling at 1500 feet in the Wortham Woodbine trend. Crouch 2 3 4 and 5 are rigging up and additional locations are being prepared as field activity intensifies under President J. K. Hughes. Water lines from Curiel field support operations.
