On December 8 1941 Lyndon B Johnson voted in Congress to declare war on Japan and Germany. The next day he volunteered for active duty in the Navy and became the first congressman to put on uniform. He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the South Pacific.
A report from Mexia notes several four round bouts including Delmer Jackson and Kid Lee. gambling devices and slot-like machines are reportedly proliferating in Groesbeck and Mexia. Red Smith won a four round decision over Delmer by County Attorney Henry Boaz. Over 180 CWA workers in Mexia received delayed payroll. Miss John Lee Stimson, Wortham history teacher, was injured in a mobile accident but rests well. Elmer Glass defeated Bill Waller in a fast bout as part of athletic club events.

The Bi Stone Baptist Workers Conference at First Baptist Church Teague featured a two part program on training Sunday School workers through a church study course and an interactive oral Q A session on Class Organization. Pamplets aided teachers and pastors with new leader training. Dan Phelps led special music before a mission program directed by Mrs James Bishop and a film on a young missionary couple in Israel. The WMU week of prayer for December 19 focuses on Crown Him Lord of All.
Forest Glade and Rosse residents hosted relatives during Thanksgiving weekend. Carolyn Hill spent time with aunt Mrs. Alice Hill. Mrs. Velma Sims and Mrs. Tommy Moore visited Christine Franklin in Waco. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Carter welcomed Hinchliffe visitors. Felix Freeman and O L Brotherton families hosted relatives in the area.
Children with neglected hearing problems repeat grades four times as often as those with normal hearing, according to the Hearing Aid Industry.
Funeral services for J. R. Smith lifelong Limestone County resident will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Sardis Primitive Baptist Church. Smith a World War I veteran died Saturday in Mexia. Burial follows at Woodside Cemetery Limestone County under Dorsey-Kealts Funeral Home. Surviving are his wife Ora Mexia mother Mrs Ora Smith of Mexia two daughters Mrs G Greh Alexander of Denison and Mrs Dorothy Mathis of Dallas two sons R J Smith of Dallas and J R Smith Jr of Mexia and eight grandchildren.
