Congress debates Truman defense plan as jitters rise. Lawmakers demand full mobilization, higher taxes, and a larger draft to deter a potential world war. They seek broader draft ages, longer service, and expanded wartime funding including a 1.05 billion behemoth for atomic programs.
Mexia businesses prepare for annual Family Night with 45 firms open for registrations until 8 30 p m Tuesday at participating locations. Harold Nussbaum president of Farmers State Bank appears in full page ad. Adults may register at multiple firms for merchandise prizes to be awarded after 8 30 p m at Commerce and Sherman. Santa Claus will visit downtown Mexia Tuesday afternoon.
Mexia Rotary club presents the Rangers quartet at Mexia City auditorium Tuesday night at 8. Advance sales show strong interest. Tickets 60 cents adults 30 cents children at the door for those not contacted by Rotary. All balcony seats reserved for Negroes.
Bruce K. Brown new deputy administrator of the Defense Petroleum Administration says there is no reason for gasoline rationing and that there is plenty of oil. He advises motorists not to worry about shortages.
In Youngstown Ohio a newborn boy with two heads and four arms died after living about 20 hours in an incubator. The infant was the subject of medical observation at a local hospital following birth.
The Rev. Tom Madden announced a youth revival at Calvary Baptist Church from December 8 to 10. Milton DuPriest will preach with Bob Feather directing music. DuPriest, a Southwestern Baptist Seminary recruit and Temple High School Baylor alum, led Europe evangelism in 1949.
President Truman attended the Army Navy football game in Philadelphia under heavy guard. Two youths briefly caused a scare by saying they could bump him off, but police arrested them and Secret Service saw no real concern. A three car presidential train led by Washington carried the president and security patrols guarded the stadium area as in past years.
American Red Cross will run first aid courses for Limestone county residents over 15 in Mexia starting December 5. James H. Hamilton of Texarkana arranged the program and trained eight locals who will teach in the course. The Red Cross aims to train millions nationwide for civil defense and peacetime lifesaving. Residents may contact the Mexia Red Cross office or A. W. DeGuire for enrollment.
Sheriff Hammett Vance says cattle thieves around Wichita Falls are bolder than the old west. He appoints George Willingham as chief investigator of Wichita County cattle thefts noting there is more rustling today than in the historical era.
Jay Virgil Scott Jr., 32, of Houston, plunged eight floors to his death in Manhattan after learning his wife planned divorce. He had been under a nurse's care for three weeks and left an incoherent note. He was the father of two children.

Mrs. Mary Frances Davis 56 a lifelong Limestone county resident died at her Big Hill home after months of illness. Funeral services were at Big Hill Methodist Church with Rev W F Smith officiating. Burial followed at Big Hill cemetery. Survived by husband Edgar and four children including A Proson Ft Worth Robert Eproson and Neulan Eproson of Big Hill and Mrs Herman Baker of Thornton.
