A four engine Eastern Air Lines DC7B crashed in dense fog near Idlewild Airport New York killing 25 of 51 aboard. Survivors described a desperate attempt to land as flames engulfed the rear section and passengers fled through exits into the fog.

Deadly chlorine gas fog hits Cornwall Ontario
A leaking railway tank car released chlorine gas in Cornwall Ontario felling about 100 people with coughing and vomiting. Emergency teams evacuated 200 residents as the gas dissipated and officials declared the area safe. Thirty five hospitalized patients were in satisfactory condition.

Freestone County Hunt Nets Heavy Fines for Five Men
Five Port Arthur men faced a total $2,287.50 fine after being accused of killing a doe deer and her fawn in Freestone County. Tyler County game warden Gene Samford said the men saw deer by a roadside and killed them on a subsequent return trip. The five named men were Norman Little, Robert Lee, James Herbert, Charles English, and Samuel Licatina. The judge ordered the confiscated animals turned over to a state institution.

Washington reports the Civilian Space Agency released a glowing sodium vapor cloud 106 miles up from Wallops Island to study winds and turbulence. A Nike Apache rocket carried the payload at dawn, visible as far as Baltimore, with a Nike Cajun sounding rocket also launched to measure electron density and temperature 73 miles up for seven days of dawn and dusk experiments.
