Wheeler Denies Indictment as Defense Battles Key Witness

Merchants Plan Meeting Next Tuesday Evening

Mexia retail merchants association secretary G L Crow announces a meeting for Tuesday night April 23 in the Topic Cafe dining room on Palestine Street. The session will set monthly meetings and cover business matters. Justice S H Flake will discuss the Texas Bogus Check Law and other new merchant laws. Delegates will be named for the state convention in May at Sas tin. All city merchants are invited.

Scout Work Expands In Limestone County Effort

The April 20 meeting at Personville school urged community support for the Boy Scouts, outlining budgets, leadership needs, and the move toward forming Limestone County council. Leaders invited participation in the May 6 Mexia celebration and described nonsectarian, nonmilitary aims and the duty of troop committees.

Must Have Constructive Program For Posterity Declared

Grand Chancellor Charles E. Baughman of the K of P lodge of Texas urged a constructive program during San Jacinto Day observations before his departure on April 24. He called for building churches and schools, parks, roads, and better use of resources to bless the present and enrich posterity.

Woman's Union Welcomes New Members at Teague

After a regular meeting of the Woman's Union of the First Presbyterian church a reception was held in the church basement to welcome ten new members added during a recent revival. President Mrs J D Marysin gave the welcome address, followed by comments from Mrs Geo Campbell. Refreshments of chicken salad sandwiches cake and lemonade were served. About fifty attended the reception.

Africans Vote to Boycott The Prince of Wales Visit

In Johannesburg the African Native Congress called for a boycott of the Prince of Wales visit after Bloemfontein shootings. A proclamation urged natives to refrain from welcoming H R H. Four workers were killed when police fired on strikers at Bloemfontein. Miss Teresa Ellis returns home from Mexia after a visit.

Nation Debates 76 Verdict as Thorne Is Hanged

Norman Thorne, a Crowborough farmer, was hanged at Wandsworth for Elsie Cameron Thorne's murder despite Conan Doyle opposing capital punishment. Elsie’s body was found dismembered after his claim she died by hanging herself. Pathologist Sir Bernard Spilsbury supported circumstantial evidence against Thorne, while debate raged over the guilt and the use of capital punishment.

Groesbeck Park Praised by Mexia Official visit

Mexia commissioner Blake Smith praised Groesbeck’s park during a visit Tuesday invited by Mayor L. L. Brown and Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce secretary Farrow. The park features an artesian spring fed lake, a 65 by 50 foot swimming pool, a smaller pool for children, a bathhouse with 50 rooms, a clubhouse, and extensive playground equipment. Brown oversees the improvements, aimed at making the park a regional beauty spot once completed.

Cameron Oil Mill Blaze Threatens City in Texas

A Tuesday afternoon fire at Cameron Oil Mill caused about 200000 dollars in damage and destroyed the mill, a church and a residence while injuring nearby structures. Fire units from Rockdale Temple and nearby towns aided, with several freight cars and fuel oil tanks lost.

Postal Clerk Death At San Angelo Office

Oscar Fartsch 44 a postal clerk killed himself at his San Angelo apartment after writing money orders claiming the task ruined him. He was found dead by fellow employees with a revolver in his hand.

Dallas Fire Causes Fifty Thousand Dollar Loss

A fire of undetermined origin broke out in an annex of the Santa Fe building under construction in Dallas during the night. One firefighter, Captain C. C. Archer, was injured when he fell over debris as damage reached about $50,000.
