The Mesquite Bicentennial Commission and Eastfield College announce a July 3 all day festival at Eastfield in Mesquite to conclude a year long celebration. Local clubs and organizations including DeMolay Mens Club Jaycees Rotary and Girl Scouts will staff booths shows and displays.

Funeral services were held Monday for Charles Eugene Moore the second victim of a Saturday truck car crash in Dallas The other victim was David Allen Blackwell of Mesquite Blackwell died at the scene and Moore died at Parkland Hospital Moore a Pepsi Cola delivery worker was from Mesquite He survived by his mother a sister and two brothers The driver of the freight truck Charles Peachy of Durham Oklahoma was not injured

Game Warden Returns to Dallas After Three-Year Absence
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game warden Jim Riggins returns to Dallas duty after a three year absence. He will work in Dallas and Lake Ray Hubbard near Mesquite. Riggins graduated from Texas A&M University game warden school in 1971 and was stationed in Dallas County for two years.

Mesquite plans a July Fourth bicentennial celebration with a Saturday jamboree at Eastfield College featuring a 10 am pet show and a 10 pm fireworks display. Sunday includes a Mesquite religious service at the Rodeo Arena with a 5 pm sermon by Dr Tom Shipp of Lovers Lane Methodist Church.

Lifesaving Course Slated by Red Cross and City
The American Red Cross and Mesquite Parks and Recreation will offer an advanced lifesaving class at City Lake Swimming Pool July 6 to 9 from 7 am to 12 noon each day. Registration is this week at the City Lake Pool mornings only. The course is limited to 20 students with a $225 textbook cost and open to anyone 15 or older. Mesquite Man Charged In Garland Murder Case
Dallas prosecutors charged Danny Drappe of Mesquite and Robert Cesler of California with capital murder in the stabbing death of 45 year old David Phillips at his Garland apartment on March 15. evidence includes a bloody butcher knife and blood traces throughout the unit. Drappe was arrested in Dallas earlier for knife robbery and was linked to Phillips car, found abandoned in Dallas. Cesler remained at large with investigators noting a phone call from the apartment on the day of the death.

A full day of events organized by local groups features a pet show at 10 a.m. sponsored by the Texas Animal Control Association plus a parade, stage performances, and sports demonstrations. Highlights include a flagpole ceremony, German dancers, political speaking by candidates, skydiving, a watermel on seed spitting contest, and a giant fireworks show at 10 p.m. Tickets for swimming cost 25 cents and food booths operate throughout the day.

Pig head left on porch sparks Mesquite mischief report
A Mesquite woman on Rayburn Street notified police of a malicious act at her home after returning from church about 9 15 p m Wednesday. She said pig head was on her front porch and named several suspects amid recent mischief. Police also investigated a revival tent break in on Bruton Road between 2 and 8 p m Wednesday. An amplifier brain worth 750 dollars was stolen from an equipment trailer after a lock was picked and the trailer re secured.

Mesquite Championship Rodeo announces nine days of Bicentennial activities from July 2 to July 10 featuring flag presentations top cowboys and cowgirls and bucking stock. A community wide religious service July 4 8 pm led by Dr Tom Shipp will cap the year with performances by Metroplex musical groups and a city choir. The KBOX-Mesquite All-American Youth Rodeo runs July 5-9 with contestants ages 10-18 and finals on July 9-10 alongside the professional rodeo shows at 8:30 pm.
