Remodeling at Wilkinson Middle in Mesquite is underway after the school board awarded the contract three weeks ago. Crews began cleanup and renovations aiming to reopen by the Mesquite Independent School District fall term. Electricians and carpenters lead the phases as work progresses toward normal operations.
Mesquite Planning and Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing Monday June 25 at 7 pm in City Council Chambers. Edgemont Park Baptist Church seeks a Planned Development amendment for a day care center and church on about 4 acres east of Hickory Tree Road between Woodcrest Drive and McWhorter Elementary. The panel will review a PD site plan for the church facility and a PD site plan for Eastfield Plaza Apartments Phase III by George Hicks, plus a replat of Eastfield Plaza on Hig Town Blvd at Interstate 30. Minutes from June 14 will be approved and a report from Commissioner Cum nock and the Apartment Study Committee will be presented.
Texas DPS director Colonel Wilson Speir warns of unusually heavy traffic and an expected 42 traffic fatalities during a 78 hour Fourth of July period. Troopers on duty will focus on drinking drivers speeders and reckless driving in an all out safety push labeled Operation Motorcide.
The American Lung Association Dallas area offers chest X ray screening with the Breathmobile at Town East Mall Mesquite on June 28 from 10 am to 1 pm and 2 to 5 pm and June 30 from 12 noon to 3 pm and 4 to 7 pm. Tuberculin skin tests also available at 3925 Maple Ave Dallas Monday to Friday 9 30 am to 12 noon and 1 to 5 pm with two visits required. The fee for both tests is 3 dollars payable at service.
Police report a 42 year old Dallas female walked out with $59 of goods, followed to the lot, struck a store employee in the elbow, and resisted detention. She was arrested and jailed in Mesquite on theft and assault charges.
Police investigate a break-in at 3501 Heath Lane Mesquite after the occupants left. An unlocked garage allowed entry with two six packs of beer consumed, garage windows broken, a beige wall telephone stolen, and other vandalism noted as officers search for suspects.
City officials anticipate a strong turnout for the Citywide Planning Committee as 45 members, including council, school district, park board, and regional representatives, meet June 29 at 7 pm in the Mesquite Public Library to refine the 1969 Comprehensive Plan with HUD grant support.
