Mesquite sanitation crews faced a heavy backlog due to personnel shortages equipment failures and a 30 percent rise in trash volume. Seven additional crews from Parks Utility and Streets joined on Wednesday and officials expect to return to regular Monday service with a plan to maintain it.
Congressman Jim Mattox announces a $60,000 ERDA grant to Travis Braun and Associates in Dallas to add a solar system at 4140 Office Parkway. Construction will start after ERDA and Bank of Dallas finalize financing. He will keynote the Solar in the Southwest 77 conference in Dallas August 27 28 1977.
Rep TH McDonald notes that during a Texas Legislature special session July 11 the public school finance bill will hinge on HB 730. He cites LFA details, 2 cent index rate, property value bases, GOER estimates, and district tax procedures as core issues to resolve after a conference committee.
Mesquite Planning and Zoning Commission will hold two public hearings Monday at 7 in City Council Chambers. The first addresses a zoning change from A-2 to Commercial for a 10 acre tract south of Town East Mall and east of the TH 635 service road. The second continues a hearing on amendments to the 1973 Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance requiring exterior fire resistant construction in several districts.
The Texas Department of Public Safety warned of an unusually high number of traffic accidents and fatalities during the July 4 holiday weekend. DPS Colonel Wilson Speir estimated 51 deaths in Texas traffic from 6 pm Friday to midnight Monday. Speir cited speeding and drinking as common factors and urged defensive driving and courtesy to improve safety.
Mesquite police arrest Larry Scritchfield 27 for allegedly selling undercover officers 50 amphetamine capsules that tested as caffeine. Authorities link the case to a national scam selling fake narcotics to truck drivers for 2.50 per capsule and 45 per 50. Investigators pursue a Michigan couple tied to the fraud, with stops listed in Atlanta Cheyenne Greensboro Lima and other cities.
