A three year contract with Bell Helicopter approved by Local 317 of the United Auto Workers raises wages by an average 85 cents per hour over three years and adds fringe benefits bringing the total increase to more than a dollar per hour, subject to federal pay board approval. The pact was approved Sunday.
Readable fragments describe two boys aged 11 and 16 starting a construction steamroller that ran into Mrs. Connie Guzman’s four room home in San Bernardino, demolishing part of the house and sofa. Nearby items include tales of rock wedding in Topanga and other reports.
Sen. George S. McGovern announced at a news conference with the Congressional Black Caucus that he had gained about 98 3/4 delegates from 12 states, mostly black, enough to win the Democratic nomination on the first ballot in Miami. He and supporters aim to unite minority groups and broaden his appeal as he heads into a three day Southern campaign swing.
President Nixon ordered all quota restrictions on meat imports lifted for 1972 to curb rising beef costs. He warned further measures could follow if needed and urged monitoring the situation to protect African housewives from unjustified price increases. Treasury Secretary Schultz said no price freeze on current raw agricultural products is planned for now.
Dallas police say the 10 month old Marvin Boyd Jr. died at Parkland Hospital after being choked with a dish towel wrapped around his neck. A 26 year old suspect was arrested as investigators treat the case as a domestic argument ending in death.
Mesquite police investigated a string of weekend crimes including a Safeway break-in at 1012 Gus Thomasson Rd where burglars damaged the safe and stole 320 cartons of cigarettes and 30 beach towels worth about 1390. Additional thefts included a Conn trumpet and electric saw from Church of God, boat gear, an air conditioner, and assorted tools from residences and a money container from Southern Maid Donuts.
Three automobile thefts were reported to Mesquite police over the past weekend. A 1970s Ford pickup F100 with North Carolina plates 7884-SS was stolen from 2305 Bamboo. A 1967 Chevrolet Camaro with Texas plates MBH 443 was taken from 401 Lindo Dr. A 1962 Chevrolet Biscayne with Texas plates MLD 694 was stolen from 207 Perkins Drive.
A 15-year-old student, Jimmy William Webb of Mesquite, suffered minor abrasions when his 1971 Yamaha 90 motorcycle collided with a 1967 Buick driven by Paula Sue Harrison at 5 40 p m Sunday near the LBJ Freeway intersection. Webb was taken to Mesquite Memorial Hospital. Harrison was uninjured and sent home.
Preliminary plans for a six acre shopping complex at Lake June Road and Hickory Tree Road were filed with Bald Springs city hall. The plan includes a Tom Thumb Super Market and a Page Drug Store near Hickory Tree Road and was forwarded to Dallas County Water District No. 6 for water and sewer service.
Miss Barbara Mitchell of Rochester New York wears an unusual eyeglass frame among many on display at the Optical Fair in St Louis where new eyewear designs lenses and instrumentation are featured.
Two attempted armed robberies in Mesquite are under police review. Glynn Covey described a would be gunman at the Highway 67 Fina Station who fled after Covey knocked the pistol aside. A blank .22 was found on site. At the Mesquite Health Club Frances English thwarted a suspect claiming a pistol before fleeing. Investigators linked arson to the towel rack fire and seek a suspect on attempted armed robbery and arson charges.
