A Mesquite safety officer sent a letter about publishing a Dear Abby piece titled Please God Im Only 17. The narrative follows a teen killed in a car crash, detailing the accident, the family’s grief, and the plea for safer driving and second chances.
Mesquite police investigated a series of minor accidents on Wednesday. A 9 year old girl, Sherrie Allene Lewis of Kemp Texas, was struck by a car driven by Sammy M Gentry of Sunnyvale in the Broadmoor Plaza parking lot and treated for a minor injury. Two additional two car crashes on Scyene Road LBJ service road and Town East Boulevard near Highway 635 resulted in minor injuries, with drivers refusing treatment.
Jimmy Piersall arrives in Mesquite for a Saturday afternoon baseball clinic at Hillcrest Field No 1. Briles of the Texas Rangers will join as a starter in the Ranger rotation and give pitching tips while Piersall covers hitting fielding and baserunning to youngsters coaches and spectators at 3 pm.
Dallas Elsa Wild Animal Appeal chapters partner with Reynolds Aluminum Recycling to collect aluminum in Mesquite on Thursdays at the Mesquite collection point behind Frans Community Center. Volunteers earn 15 cents a pound for EWAA, funds sent to Carol Flannery to support wildlife sanctuaries and preservation efforts.
Pastor William F. Sipes of North Mesquite Assembly of God hosts a concluding service Sunday June 27 at 10 45 a m at 2528 Oates Drive Mesquite offering a mass remarrying in front of the altar for couples. Husbands are asked to buy corsages for their wives and take them to dinner.
Two bands from Norris Family Music Store in Mesquite placed second and third at the Athens State Fiddlers Contest. In the Battle of the Bands, the Peanuts won second and the Untouchables took third. attendees noted bands from across the state. The Untouchables range from nine to 15 and the Peanuts up to 11.
Balch Springs marks the nation's 200th birthday with a July 3 parade led by Mayor Bill King. Units include city employees, Fire Department teams, Miss Flame, old time cars, scouts, and local businesses. The event features speeches, bands, games, contests, and a dunking machine being sought.
Friday brings partly cloudy skies with a 30 percent rain chance and possible thunderstorms some locally severe. Saturday will be partly cloudy and warm with highs near 90 Friday and mid 90s Saturday, light winds turning southeast 5 to 15 mph, rain chances 20 to 30 percent, pollution index light.
Walt Garrison, already director for US Tobacco intercollegiate rodeo, returns to competition at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo. He and Pete Gay, last week's bareback winner, will enter steer wrestling and other events on Friday night. Don Gay, two time reigning world champion, runs Saturday in bull riding and saddle bronc to boost all around standings at the Mesquite arena. Performances start 8:30 p.m. in the covered arena LBJ Freeway at Military Parkway Mesquite.
Mesquite dedicates the week including July 4 as Safe Boating Week with a city proclamation by Mayor Bob Beard. Flotilla 5-10 volunteers will offer free vessel safety inspections at the Chaha Road public boat ramp July 3 and 4 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and conduct water safety patrols over the holiday weekend.
Mesquite recorded 1.10 inches of rain in a storm that brought June totals to 4.25 inches and yearly rainfall to 33.15 inches. The front caused travel disruptions and power flashes from Pecos Valley to Hill Country, with flash flood risk and a 20 to 30 percent chance of more storms on Friday.
The Dallas Metro Crime Council paid its twelfth reward, $1,000, for information leading to the arrest and conviction of William Murray Carter, 18, for a June robbery at Mr. M store. The tip helped clear five other area robberies. Carter pled guilty and received 16 years. The DMCC total rewards reach $22,000.
