In Tel Aviv a hitchhiking soldier said a passing car discharged shots at him and he fired back. An army spokesman later said the car appeared to be a taxi with a West Bank plate and the soldier admitted he fired accidentally, claiming embarrassment over the incident.
Four zoning cases and four plats to be considered at the Mesquite City Planning Commission regular meeting set for Monday June 26 at 7 30 p m in the City Council Chamber. Cases include V and V Construction for industrial zoning along Forney Road and a rezoning of a residence to commercial on 1303 Peachtree Road.
The Vanston Park rodeo features eight events with four divisions. First second and third place winners in each event receive ribbons.
Six Mesquite patrolmen are among 14 area officers set to graduate from the North Central Texas Council of Governments Regional Police Academy in Arlington. The ceremony at Cibola Inn marks ten weeks of training for 28 officers, bringing total Basic Course graduates to 464. Fred Toler will deliver the graduation address, with mayors and police chiefs among the attendees.
Pat Dover a Mesquite High School graduate and state Miss Future Business Leader placed as a finalist at the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Houston. She attended with teacher Ruth Sanders. met Mrs. Richard Nixon and Col. Sanders for photos. The gathering drew 1400 delegates from 5000 chapters and over 100000 members across the United States.
The Oily Blobs, tar like masses washing up on Padre Island beaches, cling to skin and towels and require turpentine or alcohol to remove. Padre Island National Seashore superintendent James McLaughlin says the outbreak this year is smaller than in 1970 and suspects man made pollution rather than natural seepage. He asks a regional survey to identify the blobs and their cause, noting Gulf projects funded by the Interior Department.
Colonel Wilson E Speir director of the Texas Department of Public Safety estimated that 58 lives would be lost in Texas during the 102 hour July 4th holiday weekend from 6 p m Friday June 30 to midnight Tuesday July 4. He said one third of fatal accidents may involve only one vehicle and that speed and drunken driving are major factors.
Police report multiple thefts including two Weimaraner dogs and fishing gear at Ronald Clementsen’s home after a gate was forced open. Jewelry and an ice cream freezer were stolen from Mr. and Mrs. James R. Shuptrine’s home with dates ranging from late 1971 to mid 1972. A further theft of fishing equipment occurred at Phillip G. Stewart’s residence.
The Bald Springs city council plans a Monday session to consider commercial zoning for three residential tracts. Hugh Bearden seeks changes for 1803 Peachtree and 3123 Hickory Tree Road, while Robert DePriest and William Miller request same for Lots 1 and 2, Block A at 3704 and 3708 Hickory Tree Road. Also at 7:30 p.m. Anna Burns and Virgil Canady request clarification of trailer and mobile home ordinances.
The UPI dispatch reports the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department biologists are raising a hybrid bass from Florida and Texas natives at Jasper State Fish Hatchery. The first of the "superbass" is six inches long two months after hatching and aims to reach 20 pounds in ten years. Bass anglers welcome the development as a major attraction for the sport.
