In Bellefontaine Ohio a Girl Scout troop sells fireflies to raise money after Sigma Chemical Co of St Louis said it needs a million fireflies for a chemical. The troop overseer Mrs Orren Johnston said they sent 240 insects and will receive payment on a sliding scale.
Western Electric Mesquite employees from the Pioneer Organization donated a talking dog to the Hunt County Opportunity Center in Greenville. The device, designed by John Buckley and delivered by Ron Bouchard and Paul Trued, supports outreach for intellectually challenged students and aligns with the club’s community service efforts.
An 11 member Mesquite United Way Advisory Committee met in the Bank of Mesquite board room to plan the 1973 Mesquite campaign. Chairing duties fell to Carolyn Chesshir with Pam Jones presiding in her absence. A Mexican DC-9 with 27 aboard en route from Houston to Mexico City crashed into a Pacific Coast mountain near Puerto Vallarta. Landowners protest steep property tax increases as Mesquite’s Tax Equalization Board reviews Area 2 and undeveloped tracts in the Mesquite Independent School District. Raw land saw the largest jump, with some parcels up over 1,000 percent, while flood plain land valued at 500 per acre and non flood land at 1500 per acre. About 90 landowners scheduled hearings at City Hall as the board meets daily to Friday to prepare a formal report for the City Council.
Efforts are underway to form a Mesquite chapter of Texas Taxpayers, Inc., spurred by dramatic property tax increases from Mesquite city and Mesquite School Independent School District valuation changes. The group describes itself as a non profit, non political organization aiming to minimize the tax burden while advising public servants and reporting potential malfeasance. Beneficiaries and contact points include Buster Convillion and several local residents with phone numbers listed. The organization, formed in 1962, lists Rev. V Z Smith as president and a slate of directors.
Mesquite police search for a man and woman suspected in stealing 110 dollars from two cash registers at Skillern's Drug Store in Town East Mall on Wednesday. Carlton Reynolds, the store manager, said a clerk left her area for change and returned to find the money missing. The clerk reported seeing two suspicious persons in the store before the theft. Police describe the suspects and are actively seeking them.
