Youthful delegates at Explo ’72 toured Dallas spreading the Good News. About 100,000 attendees attended morning seminars and packed Cotton Bowl mass meetings each night, with mixed door-to-door reception across the city.
The city of Mesquite learned its Bureau of Outdoor Recreation grant of $127,800 will be matched by local funds to create 64 acre Paschall Park in the South Mesquite Creek area off New Market Road. Plans include a multi purpose athletic complex, lighted fields, restrooms, shelters, nature trails, an archery range, and parking. The grant brings Mesquite’s federal funds this month to $983,055 alongside a separate $855,255 sewer extension grant.
City of Mesquite reports 342 truck loads of discarded items collected during the May 22 to June 2 cleanup campaign. City crews from Street Maintenance and Parks, along with Utilities and Sanitation divisions, removed 1 360 cubic yards of junk and brush, vastly increasing participation due to publicity and Operation MICAN outreach.
A 23 year old man was arrested in Shreveport Louisiana on an assault with intent to murder charge for beating a Mesquite woman in the 3000 block of Clover. The victim, 58 to 60, sustained serious head injuries and cuts and was hospitalized at Parkland. Extradition will be pursued by the Dallas County DA.
Thieves robbed three Mesquite homes Monday through Wednesday, with Wanda Neil Strong reporting the largest loss at 4745 Sarazen. A four hour Wednesday night window saw entry via a slit screen and sliding door, looting most rooms. Items missing include a record player TV tape player firearms jewelry and other valuables.
Two separate felony theft cases are under investigation by Mesquite Police Department. Losses total more than 650 dollars, including fishing gear from a Kingfisher boat and power tools and other items from garages. An attempted home entry yielded a TV set and a .22 revolver. A Garland man suffered minor injuries in a weather related crash on IH 635 IH 20.
Western Electric Co Inc Mesquite plant at 3000 Skyline Drive marks its 5000th ESS Junctor Switch Frame destined for Baltimore central office. Production rose from 300 workers in 1969 to over 1500 by 1971 aided by more space, training, and skilled staff.
Big M Mesquite reports seven area tracker organs on a single day as part of the American Guild of Organists biennial convention in Dallas June 17-24. Tour stops include St Stephen’s Methodist in Mesquite and venues in Dallas Denton and Fort Worth.
