Mesquite school trustees voted 7-1 to urge Governor Dolph Briscoe to convene a special session at the earliest date to push a new statewide school finance bill after a report on the Legislature's failure to act on a compromise bill.
The Mesquite Independent School District awarded a two year depository contract to First State Bank of Mesquite after evaluating bids from First State Bank First National Bank Mesquite and First Bank of Balch Springs. Bank of Mesquite did not bid, and two trustees recused themselves due to stockholdings. The district will pay 4 percent interest on deposits with six percent overdraft charge and $2000 for record keeping. Superintendent Poteet noted last year’s interest close to one million dollars. this year bids were lower but still favorable.
Red Cross offers a summer swimming program for handicapped children from June 20 through July at Vanston Pool 2417 Oates Drive Mary Moore. Mesquite Water Safety Chair Patsy Thompson leads sessions three days a week from 1 to 1 pm Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays for ages six and up with physician consent and a signed diagnosis. Each participant needs a responsible adult supervisor during classes.
The Marchris Marionettes led by Phe Chandler Brothers perform Gay 9s with those Fabulous Zeigfeld Girls at Town East Mall with free shows on weekdays at 1 4 and 7 pm and Saturday at noon 2 pm and 7 pm The act has toured globally including a White House command performance for Lyndon B Johnson and his family per Lady Bird Johnsons diary.
Rep Jim Mattox told Mesquite's Flag Day crowd the American revolution for freedom justice and equality continues though 200 years old He urged nonviolent progress and praised veterans while noting the flag's meaning and potential for war if needed The event was hosted by the Elks Lodge with local veterans groups and Boy Scouts present.
A local weather observer reported three inches of rain falling in Mesquite and nearby areas in less than an hour. Harsh clouds and strong winds accompanied the downpour, delivering a welcomed relief to farmers and homeowners facing brown grass amid a spring with extreme heat.
