Mesquite Opens Bookmobile Service With Dedication
A 11 30 am dedication marks the Mesquite Public Library bookmobile launch at 1010 Pioneer Road beside Jordan's Supermarket. City funds totaled 8 450 for purchase and renovation. Maureta Dillard leads the staff assisting Jim Johnson and Mischa Harrington. The mobile unit will visit five locations weekly offering registration and access to interlibrary loan and the Summer Reading Club.

TP&L Chief Warns of Brownouts If Gas Banned for Power
Texas Power and Light President J F Skelton warned during a Railroad Commission hearing that banning natural gas as a boiler fuel would leave TP&L unable to meet demand. He said 85 percent of its capacity relies on gas and that replacing gas plants with coal or nuclear would take 20 years and cost billions. He urged gradual transition and continued access to natural gas to avoid massive outages.

Three North Mesquite High School students Cindy Herring Melanie Roden and Liz Shelton were named outstanding performers at the Texas State Solo Ensemble Contest held at the University of TexasAustin. The national field included 11 220 finalists from 80 000 regional entrants with Anderson High School Austin winning the Sweepstakes Award for most points.

Mesquite Hospital Authority approves 63 20 financing for two projects. Manor Care Inc plans a 120 bed hospital at H 30 and Motley in North Mesquite. A second proposal combines Mesquite Memorial and Rutherford General, central Mesquite. Each group will form a not for profit corporation and bond issue sponsor with a seven member board.

Mesquite Independent School District trustees approved buying five more acres of an eightacre site in Garland for an elementary school addition in the New World No. 4 Addition near Stroud Lane and Valley Mills Drive. Mesquite High School choral students earned top honors at the state solo and ensemble competition in Austin. Lucy Tamez of the A Cappella choir won first division in vocal solo, a girls ensemble including Lucy, Rosemary Pardue and Carolyn Cole also rated first division, and a madrigal group led by Carren Bailey and others received superior ratings. Denise Bilbrey earned a superior piano solo, while Il division ratings went to Shelley Crandall, John Hanby, Debbie Grisham, Rosemary Pardue, Ken Baiseri and Dee Evans.
