Maddox calls for recount in close Dallas County sheriff race
Maddox who carried Mesquite area precincts in the Democratic runoff said he will contest the election of Sheriff Clarence Jones. He trailed by 513 votes with 18 241 to 17 728 after about 6 000 voters cast in the Democratic sheriff runoff. Dallas County Clerk Larry Murdoch noted the $3 per precinct recount fee totaling 1038 for 45 precincts.

The City Council awarded Bank of Mesquite a two year depository services contract after a prior two year run. The bank will pay 0.6 percent on deposits of 100000 or more and lend at the lesser of the Dallas prime rate or 5 percent. Repurchase terms were 75 percent of the average bid and asked yields for 90 day Treasuries. City estimates idle funds will earn about 70000 less in interest over the next two years than previously.

A 1A Zoning Plan Tabled by City Council
City Council tabled the proposed A-1A zoning plan to study a new R 1A district combining R-1 and R-2 elements. The plan sets an 1,800 square foot minimum dwelling on an 8,250 square foot lot with a 10 percent dwelling square footage alteration for 10 percent of subdivisions. Other provisions include no lot width or depth requirements and a 15 foot rear setback. Five members voted to table and seek a joint meeting with the Planning and Zoning Commission to discuss further.
