Firefighters battled a morning blaze at 4404 Scottsdale in North Mesquite. Investigators say a flammable liquid was placed between the front door and its screen, igniting the door and causing about 1500 dollars in property damage plus 150 dollars to contents. The Harrison family slept through the incident and arson suspects remain at large.

Seven teachers from three Mesquite elementary schools are selected for the 1975 Outstanding Elementary Teachers of America honor. Bea Willoughby Gladys Brien Craddock Edna Helen Batts and Linda Lee Pettier of Range Elementary join nominees from Motley Shands and other schools for possible national recognition with a $500 grant.
Mesquite building permits rose sharply in May totaling 3.67 million with 51 single family dwellings approved. A $2.2 million permit for the West Mesquite High School complex led the values, while other permits covered signs fences repairs and institutional work. Through May permits reached 523 valued at 9.17 million versus 569 permits totaling 11.44 million at this time last year.
The Bennington flag will replace Old Glory over Mesquite School District buildings next school year to honor the nation’s 200th birthday. First flown at the Bennington battle in August 1777, it was the first stars and stripes used by U S land forces and will be flown with the state flag over district buildings.
Balch Springs residents push bicentennial efforts with cemetery cleanup behind the Community House and tree planting. A June 28 parade is planned with entries sought. The town eyes historical markers, city designation, and hydrant painting contest deadlines.
