D Day Remembered Thirty Years On In Normandy Tribute
Mesquite honors D-Day veterans led by Gen Omar Bradley at Omaha and Utah beaches, recalling the June 6 1944 invasion and the losses of local hero John L Hanby and Winifred E Hayden. The Hanby Hayden US Army Reserve Center was named in 1963 for the two men. John Hamby served with the 9th Infantry and was killed August 3 1944 after landing at Normandy.

Dallas man found guilty in Mesquite motel robbery
A Dallas jury convicted Lorse Gainous, 22, of robbery and assault to murder for the Rodeway Inn hold up in Mesquite on Jan 16. He received 70 years for robbery and 20 for assault to murder. His brother Floyd Gainous and 15 year old Ruth Spears faced separate charges or commitments. The case was led by Mesquite Police and involved two officers from the Crime Scene Search Unit. One bandit shot manager Fred Wyant. $400 was stolen and Wyant later returned to work. Lorse Gainous was arrested in Houston on Feb 5.

Her one year term will involve travel representing the Texas group.
