Texas Power and Light plans an 11 percent average rate increase for electric service and Lone Star Gas seeks higher local gas rates to cover current costs and an 8 percent return. Mesquite officials will hear both requests at the Monday meeting.
The Mesquite City Council will hear TP and L and Lone Star rate increase requests affecting Mesquite Sunnyvale and Bald Springs with bills from Oct 1 1975. Hunt Properties zoning changes in Skyline Business Park draw large public interest and the meeting agenda is moved to 6 p.m. to accommodate speakers.
Congress records list Mesquite Police Patrolman Travis Williams among 117 officers killed in the line of duty from May 15, 1974 to May 15, 1975. Introduced by Rep. Mario Biaggi, the Roll of Honor notes Williams fell Sept 23, 1974 at IH 20 and Belt Line in Dallas County during a burglary investigation. Also named are seven other Texas officers including Captain Danny Gray and Detective W. C. Simmons.
Prosecutor Mike Hinton displayed a color photo of Timothy Mark O'Bryan's body and told the jury the defendant Ronald Clark O'Bryan killed the boy with cyanide in a Halloween candy stick to cash in on a $61,000 life insurance scheme. The state urged the death penalty after eight years of detention and an agonizing trial.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reversed Henry Morris of Dallas, overturning a 40 year prison sentence for shooting Bald Hills Officer Charles Lee outside the Dallas County Courthouse on June 14, 1973. The court said the record does not support a conviction under the revised Penal Code and returned the case to Dallas.
Mrs James F Meara asked to speak at the Mesquite Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting on June 12 about changing the policy excluding private and parochial school students from Mesquite Municipal Golf Course student passes. She cited that officials told her passes were limited to Mesquite Independent School District students only.
Mesquite plans the 1975 76 operating budget starting Oct 1 1975 and invites citizens to complete a short form to guide emphasis and priorities. City staff will weigh input against department requests and overall resources then discuss with the City Council before September budget approval.
The Bald Springs Historical and Genealogical Society notes that in early Texas couples often shared beds without clergy. A 1837 Texas law legalized bond marriages when ministers or officials were unavailable, allowing civil marriage later, a practice echoed today by some Texans choosing cohabitation.
