Mesquite MEIBC Meets On Housing Vehicles And Recycling

Mesquite Fire Units Respond to Lake June Road dwelling fire
Firemen reported a dwelling fire on Lake June Road near Bruton Road around 9 42 pm Monday. Occupant Dallas Anderson listed as resident. Fire began from a short in the wiring at the front of the house. Damage described as light with no injuries. Units extinguished the blaze and left the scene.

Mesquite City Council approved pursuing two federal grants for the Police Department. A $60,000 Criminal Justice Council grant would fund a 24 month special investigation unit with one sergeant two patrolmen and a clerk-typist plus a $5,000 transportation allocation. A Governor's Office on Traffic Safety grant could hire 1 to 3 more traffic accident investigators for 12 months. Council also set land purchase terms for Peachtree Road extension and ordered an employee attitude survey. The recent cleanup drive collected 195.5 loads of trash, up from 175 last year.

Man sentenced to death for dismemberment murder of Mormon missionary
Robert Elmer Kleasen was sentenced to die in the electric chair for the dismemberment murder of 19 year old Mark Fischer, a Mormon missionary from Milwaukee. The seven man five woman jury took 20 minutes to reach the verdict after Kleasen proclaimed his innocence.

Dr Richard Russell of Mesquite was honored at the American Heart Association Dallas County Chapter annual meeting for leading the Mesquite Unit to a very successful year in program work and campaign efforts. The Mesquite Unit conducted the first annual Jogathon under his presidency while Dr Henry McGill Jr of San Antonio spoke on the theme A Past Look A Future's View. Russell also serves as president of the Mesquite Independent School District Board of Trustees.
