The first production Tupolev 144, pride of Soviet civilian aviation, crashed at Bourget Airfield during a display to 300000 spectators, plunging 500 feet in a ground fireball as it began a turn. The disaster marked the first crash of a civilian SST.
Three people were hurt in a late Sunday two car crash on LBJ Freeway near Oates Drive in Mesquite. Ruel Parker of Tioga Texas drove a 1966 Chevrolet Impala into the rear of Thomas Sikes of Dallas ride, leaving Sikes stalled with no lights. Eula Hood of Tioga, a Parker passenger, was listed as seriously injured. Parker and Sikes had minor injuries and declined treatment. Hood was taken to Parkland Hospital.
Rev Tom Wilbanks of the First Presbyterian Church in Mesquite had a letter printed in the Congressional Record. The letter accompanied Rep Wright Patman of Texarkana as he spoke on The Gambling Craze An Irresponsible Approach to Revenue Raising. Patman argued states should not prey on citizens by legalizing gambling to fund programs. He warned gambling leads to rackets destitution and corruption.
Unofficial rainfall measured at seven inches between noon Sunday and 6 a m Monday at Central Fire Station caused extensive flooding across Mesquite. City Manager Bill York said the volume was among the worst in recent years but no loss of life was reported.
Heavy rain and high winds weekend left streets flooded and bridges blocked across Mesquite. Fire units rescued occupants from a stalled car at LBJ Freeway and La Prada Dr and a flooded home on Oleander. A house near Bryan St was struck by lightning and damaged. no injuries. Storm toppled trees and damaged a football sign at Mesquite High School as crews handled multiple weather related calls and other emergencies.
An armed robber stole 135 dollars from Mr. M. Food Store at 3903 Gus Thomasson Rd in Mesquite Sunday at 9 10 p m. The clerk, Ruby Nelson, said a young white male about 5 10 and 140 pounds wore blue jeans and brandished a pistol. He bound her ankles and wrists with tape then fled after grabbing cash and searching the store. Police seek a nervous suspect with brown eyes and hair.
Ivy Ferguson a burly 42 year old father of two said after being checked into a women's ward and quickly discharged by officials he has endured embarrassing moments during his years. A botanist from Mill Valley and a sheriff's deputy silhouetted in a window during a home search found a large three foot high collection of marina plants.
The five Anderson children Jeff Glenda Delayne Wayne and Ed of Mesquite earned straight A grades this year with Jeff finishing near perfect aside from one B in physics Glenda a future journalist is MHS Monitor business manager and an aspiring reporter Delayne Wayne Ed also excelled with routes at Mesquite Daily News and a science fair runner up The family emphasizes self driven learning and pride in achievement not external rewards
