Warm weather recreation draws Mesquite residents to lake sailing. Sailboats appear on Lake Bay Hubbard as enthusiasts praise wind powered travel for relaxation and fun.
The City of Mesquite joins the Texas Innovation Group TIG run by Texas A&M University Center for Urban Programs to develop efficient city government solutions. City Manager Ken Duggins and city staff begin planning with partial National Science Foundation funding.
A 17-year-old Mesquite youth faces attempted murder charges after allegedly backing a car into another 17-year-old at Peachtree Apartments around 8 p.m. The victim was dragged, wedged under the tire, and hospitalized in satisfactory condition with multiple injuries. The suspect is in Mesquite City Jail.
A benefit dance to aid 14 year old Kevin Ellis will be held by the Ladies Auxiliary and members of Amvets Post 10 at 528 South Galloway Ave Mesquite at 8 p.m. Friday June 10. Kevin awaits his fourth surgery after a hip fracture and calcium deficiency. Tickets cost 150 at the post and 2 dollars at the door.
State Representative John Bryant announced Governor Briscoe signed House Bill 34 giving the Dallas County Commissioners Court power to regulate massage parlors. He credited Rylie and Southeast Dallas County residents for lobbying over three years. The measure allows strict restrictions and immediate action by the commission.
The Mesquite Chamber of Commerce added 32 members in a week long enrollment drive led by Mustangers president Jim Murray. New members included Christy Hamman and Paul Oliver with five each, Danny Hodges four, Randall Thompson three, Joann Cheek and Ron Price two each, and C J Pryor one. The 32 new members bring $2 400 in annual dues.
A Mesquite Police Special Investigation Unit led by Sgt. Bill Drew reports long undercover hours yielding a captured suspect in rapes and attempted rapes in the north Mesquite. The SIU, formed with grant funding, coordinates with MPD and other agencies to tackle persistent crime through focused investigations and regional information sharing.
The Administration Building at 405 E. Davis and the Curriculum Building will observe summer hours after Memorial Day. Monday through Thursday both buildings open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 8 a.m. to 3 30 p.m. Fridays. Principals remain in their schools through June 10 and return August 1. Opening day for the 1977 78 school year is Thursday August 18.
