Eastfield College publishes its Spring 1973 Community Service Programs catalog. The courses cover business and secretarial work, management development, languages, vocational skills, health, arts and sports with no entrance requirements and varied topics from ecology to auto repair and scuba diving at affordable prices.
Dallas area officials pledged a 30 day effort to persuade Amtrak to add Dallas to its Midwest routes. Rep elect Alan Steelman urged a unified front from officials and the public while Mayor Wes Wise warned the outlook was not good.
City Manager Bill York predicts Mesquite will grow about 10 percent in population and tax base in 1973, with 16 000 to 18 000 new residents as the North Mesquite Creek sewer trunk opens on the eastern edge. He cites federal funds, revenue sharing, and new programs including a mobile city hall, library expansion, Fire Station 5, park development, zoning updates, and beautification efforts as drivers of progress.
Nine Mesquite Rangerette members will join Kilgore Junior College performers in Dallas New Year’s Day events. They will take part in the Cotton Bowl Parade and perform at halftime of the Texas Longhorns vs Alabama Crimson Tide game.
The city manager notes a 1973 completion for a study aiding government efficiency and service delivery. An city hall enlargement project may begin in 1973 with bids possibly called in the latter part of next year. He says 1972 was successful and anticipates bigger plans ahead.
President Nixon ordered a halt to bombing above the 20th parallel and announced peace talks with Hanoi would resume in Paris on January 8. Kissinger will return to lead discussions with Le Duc Tho and Xuan Thuy, with technical talks set for January 2.
At 7 25 a m Friday on IH 20 near Big Town Blvd a two vehicle collision caused minor injuries to Augustine Rodriguez Jr 24 and Maria Juanita Cruz in Balch Springs both passengers were transported to Baylor Hospital by Mesquite Fire Department. Jack V Henley who drove a 1963 Chrysler 300 was unhurt and no one else sustained injuries.
A 19 year old Dallas man was arrested by Mesquite police on embezzlement by false swearing charges for a bogus early morning armed robbery report at MacLelland and Son. He allegedly claimed gunmen held him up and stole two coin containers containing unspecified money. Police say he took the money and filed the false report.
