The U S Postal Service will delay scheduled rate increases until March 2 after a Cost of Living Council order to reduce the rise. Postmaster General EF T Klassen says first class would rise from 1 to 10 cents and airmail from 11 to 13 cents with other categories also increased.
The Akron Chamber of Commerce terminated all financial and administrative responsibility for the All-American Soap Box Derby, citing cheating fraud and hoax as factors. The 1973 winner James Gronen, 14, of Boulder Colp, was disqualified for an illegally placed electromagnet giving a faster start.
Four hooded men admitted to UPI reporters in Bordeaux that they killed Spanish Prime Minister Luis Carrero Blanco last week for Basque independence and socialism. They said none of the seven Spanish suspects named by Madrid had a hand in the killing.
The London Times reported that Durham University sent four stern memoranda to each department on saving paper while the Department of Archeology received six copies and the Department of Classics nine, highlighting uneven memo distribution.
The Nixon administration agreed to release $30 million of $150 million impounded for rural water and sewer projects amid congressional pressure. The Agriculture Department will spend up to $30 million of the water and sewer funds while the remaining $120 million stays impounded. The move also increases school meal program payments to offset rising breakfast and lunch costs.
More than 500,000 Britons are unemployed with potential rise to a million as officials report little progress in ending the wage dispute between the National Coal Board and the coal miners union. National Health Enterprises sold its Mesquite General Hospital to Dr. Randolph R. Gillum of Mesquite. The 134 bed facility on Gus Thomason Road will be renamed Rutherford General Hospital to honor Sam Rutherford. Gillum plans a new nonprofit corporation and a 320 bed Mesquite hospital expansion.

Mesquite Chamber of Commerce selects a Western motif for its annual membership banquet set for February. Bill Short heads the committee with John Childs, Charles Scheurenberg, Weldon Lacy and others aiding in plans. A Shreveport humorist Newt Hielsc herg is slated to speak, and guests will be asked to wear Western attire.
The National Safety Council sticks to its estimate that 470 to 570 people will die on U.S. highways during the New Year weekend. It bases the figure on Dec 22 citing lower speeds and lighter traffic due to gasoline shortages. The 102 hour period from 6 pm Friday to midnight Tuesday is projected at 70 deaths above the nonholiday rate, with 400 deaths expected in a comparable nonholiday period. An international count noted at least 518 deaths in traffic during the four day Christmas weekend, the lowest in four decades. The council had projected 550 to 650 for Christmas, noting the higher toll would occur without the energy crisis.
Cloudy, cooler conditions expected across Mesquite and northeast Texas on Sunday with possible widely scattered thundershowers. Temperatures projected to range from the mid thirties to the upper fifties.
Texas AAA says 78 percent of service stations will be open Monday and about one third open New Year’s Day. Only 1 percent plan to close Saturday, while 92 percent will shut Sunday. No local driving problems expected if motorists fill up Saturday or Monday. Findings based on a random survey in 44 Texas communities.
