Official state and DC canvasses show Nixon at 60.9 percent of the popular vote, short of Johnson 1964 and Roosevelt 1936 marks. News moves to diplomacy as Nixon stays sequestered in Florida during Christmas.
A West Fresno Baptist church service was interrupted by three young men who robbed attendees as hymn singing continued. Four purses and two wallets were taken while a dozen worshippers were present. David Garcia finished the service and alerted police afterward.
In Ataladero California two armed bandits forced entry into St Williams Church rectory on Christmas early morning. They tied up Rev. Harry D. Freidermuth and stole the midnight mass offering before escaping. Deputies investigated the break in and counted the takings.
Former President Harry S. Truman, age 88, died today after a 22 day battle with age and disease. He passed at 7:50 a.m. CST in a sixth floor room at Research Hospital after slipping into a deep coma, ending a long, characteristic fight to stay alive.
Mesquite Police tracked robberies and thefts during the Christmas weekend. An armed robbery near SH 30 involved a 1969 Volkswagen, cash, and a Kool cigarette pack. A left car door theft occurred from a 1969 Chevelle. Burglary at 2732 Larchmond yielded eight firearms and other items. Purse snatchings affected Cynthia Daniels and Odalee Thomas. The log described mainly petty incidents with one armed robbery.
The home of Mr. and Mrs. James Cox at 2228 Shirra Way won the 1972 Mesquite Chamber of Commerce Christmas Lighting Contest grand prize in Area 2 and citywide. Cox received $35. area winners got $10 and runners up $5. Police report Patrolman Johnny Blake was shot in the left hand by a traffic violator during a stop on I 635.
National Safety Council projected 550 to 650 traffic fatalities for the 78 hour Christmas period ending Monday. United Press International counted 550 deaths by 7 a.m. CST and 575 by 10 a.m. EST.
U.S. Representative elect Alan Steelman a Republican to take office in 1973 pledges to restore Amtrak rail passenger service to the Dallas area. He says Dallas was wrongly excluded and will push Washington and local leaders, including Mayor Wise and Chamber officials, to reverse the decision. He plans to work with Senators Tower and Bentsen and Texas delegation to show Dallas as a major market and revenue source for Amtrak.
