Washington Congress failed to reach agreement after a 16 hour session and postponed a decision on granting President Nixon broad authority to handle the ECHOPEN Crisis. The stalemate also blocked adjournment of the first session of the 43rd Congress as both chambers rejected a daytime adjournment request.
Comedian Bob Hope spent a Christmas with patients at Letterman General Hospital during the Berlin airlift era in 1948. He joked with wounded and retired service members while noting his long tradition of visiting troops since 1941.
Officials confirm 12 typhoid fever cases traced to a seafood dinner at a Burlington County church in Mount Holly New Jersey. Health department spokesman says no deaths and outbreak remains confined to Burlington City area. Authorities seek to contact others who attended the supper.
In Washington Pennsylvania on January NS a trial date was set for deposed United Mine Workers president Wo AL Pony Bowle on three murder charges in the 1969 Yablonski family killings. Bowle, described in wheelchair and wearing bright cen pajamas and a black robe, pleaded innocent to the murders of union insurgent Joseph Jock Yablonski, his wife and daughter.
President Nixon is expected to sign a two step one percent boost in Social Security benefits for about 300 million retirees disabled workers widows and dependents. The bill passed final congressional approval late Friday after a prolonged House Senate dispute.
The Texas Highway Commission schedules a public hearing on January 5 to lower state speed limits to 60 mph, aiming to save about one million gallons of fuel daily and protect $241 million in annual federal highway funds. If federal caps drop further, state limits may drop accordingly.

Toys were collected and distributed to Mesquite Memorial and General Hospital children on Christmas Day, and the Employee's Club arranged holiday baskets and gifts for a local family through Mesquite Social Service. John Todd delivered a comic show and Briggs Todd handed out Christmas bonuses.

Janet Lauderdale and Steve Henley won first in debate, Rhonda Crump first in poetry interpretation, Cindy Gray second in dramatic interpretation. Jerry Smith named outstanding speaker. Smith and James Creech judged superior in debate. Janet and Steve also won first in novice debate at Sunset Tournament. Rhonda and Eva Venable took second in duet acting at Irving Tournament. Hillcrest totals include Terry King second in prose interpretation. Sandy Mayo second in oratory. Henley and Becky Gardner second in debate. Thelma Pate heads the department.
Dr John Horn named campaign director for Mesquite as the 1974 March of Dimes drive runs January 1 through 31. The campaign supports medical services research education and public health projects with a focus on maternal and infant health care and perinatology. Volunteers and student leaders including Sabrina Stovall Roy Howard Patti Patton and Jim McCoy are set to participate in the annual Miles for Dimes march and upcoming student marches.
