Governor Dolph Briscoe ordered a special session in Austin to reduce speed limits across Texas to 55 miles per hour. He warned the state risks losing federal highway funds if Congress pushes reductions and said lawmakers should not delay the session with energy proposals, aiming to finish before Christmas.
UPI reports J Paul Getty III, heir to the American billionaire fortune, freed in Italy after a five month kidnapping. Police found the 17 year old near Lagonegro south of Naples and he was taken to national police headquarters in frail condition. A ransom of nearly three million dollars was paid for his release and one car was missing.
Continental Oil Co. Vice President C Howard Hardesty told the Fort Worth chamber of commerce that everyone bears responsibility for the energy shortage. He condemned a “burn it all up” mindset in industry and among consumers, warned rationing is unavoidable, and expressed hope it will not last long.
Washington upi Sen William B Saxbe R Ohio will delay his swearing in as attorney general until after the new year so he can gain a congressional pension. Saxbe aides say the delay is a fortunate occurrence not the pension as the reason, as he will have five years in his first term and become pension vested after Jan 3.
New York UPI reports Dr William Likoff of Hahnemann College in Philadelphia says heart disease is driven more by genetics than by smoking or overeating. He notes vulnerable individuals are often descendants of those with arterial blockage and urges prudent behavior. Detroit UPI adds Ford plans 450000 more small cars in 1974 amid gasoline concerns, expecting small cars to half of U.S. sales, with GM and Chrysler predicting lower 1974 volumes.
A car carrying three people, two of whom were blind, overturned on Interstate 35 near the northeast side of San Antonio early today. Richard D Foster, 22, a blind man, was killed. Jose Espinoza, 19, also blind, and Russell Dehart, 18, the driver, were hospitalized with injuries.
In Carson a teen tried force Canty to surrender cash. Canty, 20, grabbed a pistol at the counter and fired four times. the youth fled wounded in the legs and buttocks. Police found the bleeding would be robber a block away. In Iowa City National Research Systems Inc was dissolved after a judge called its advertising a house of intellectual prostitution and authorized an AG probe.
A Christmas card legal parody shows State of Texas vs Santa Claus alias Kris Kringle, indicting him for burglary of Ebenezer Scrooge's private residence on December 24, 1972, and disturbing the peace with loud Christmas phrases. The motion to dismiss argues First and Fourteenth Amendment protections and lack of a valid criminal offense, filed by the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association led by Phil Burleson.
Mesquite City Council meets Monday December 17 at 1 30 p m in the Council Chamber to review plans for expanding and remodeling the Mesquite Municipal Building as part of the 1969 Capital Improvements Program. The meeting includes an ordinance on a 10 percent rate increase by Texas Power and Light Co and numerous related items.
The regular work session will discuss varied items from fuel supply and recycling to senior citizen programs. Topics include service center improvement bids, Greenbelt Plan, affirmative action policy, senior recreation programs, emergency sewer repairs, cleanup initiatives, and costs for plastic bags and fuel.
Nationwide clock change set for 2 am on Jan 6 marks U S move to year round daylight saving time through Oct 1975 President Nixon signed the energy measure after Congress approved it and officials say the shift will save about 150 000 barrels of oil daily in winter with minimal inconvenience. Nixon urged swift action on other energy proposals and called for a statutory base for the Federal Energy Administration to lead energy efforts.
Mesquite laden with a national energy crisis plan. City Manager Bill York urges conservation and lists steps for employees: limit trips, consolidate, carpool, idle reduction, smooth starts, follow speed laws, inflate tires, use lunch hour to check field problems, turn off lights and heaters, and pass energy saving ideas to supervisors as Gulf Oil imposes a one percent gasoline cutback.
More than fifty students completed Mesquite High School GED preparation courses sponsored by Mesquite Public Evening School. New sessions start January 3 covering sixty hours of material with Tuesday and Thursday evening classes from 7 to 9 pm. The GED test costs ten dollars, but courses are free and materials are provided.
