Washington reports show gasoline use fell 15 percent in the three weeks to November 30 while the combined consumption of gasoline, heating oil, diesel and jet fuel dropped 29 percent. Officials note a 1.1 billion barrel per day reduction in crude oil use, reflecting administration pressure to curb energy use.

A man who shopped at 5 30 am before stores opened triggered a burglary arrest at Mesquite. Police recovered clothing valued at 2000 from Sanger Harris and another Big Town store. The 32 year old male suspect was jailed pending charges and had unspent cartridges and a pistol sales slip found on him.

North Mesquite and Mesquite High School football drew almost 15 000 fans at Hanby Stadium for the annual rivalry, producing the largest gate receipts on record. Superintendent Dr Ralph Poteet noted all profits stay local as the two schools shared net profits of roughly 164 39 each from the game.
