Astronauts Edge Moon Valley On Final Apollo Mission
On Apollo 17's first excursion from Challenger in Taurus Littrow, Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt spent 7 hours 12 minutes exploring a lunar valley. They drove 3 1/2 miles to an avalanche at a sunlit mountain 7,790 feet high, saw two meteoroid-like flashes from orbit, and reported excellent scenery. The mission chief praised their work as they prepared for more rock collection before sleep to recover from a 22 hour day.

Mesquite area ice rapidly turned to slush as freezing rain and drizzle melted Monday night. Two weather related injuries were reported Monday with minor injuries. a six year old boy was bruised after being run over by a trash trailer and a tractor trailer rig overturned with the driver sustaining slight injuries.

Mesquite School Bonds Attract Low Interest Rate
Texas Commerce Bank of Houston won the $2.1 million Mesquite Independent School District bond issue at 4.88941 percent for bonds maturing 1975 to 1994. Republic National Bank of Dallas bid 4.9215 percent. Proceeds fund air conditioning in ten schools, with eight cents per $100 valuation increase in 1973 74 and seven cents in 1974 76. Total bond program is $3.7 million to be completed by 1973 74, with remaining issues next year.

One Man Crime Wave Brought Down by Arrest in Mesquite
Mesquite police arrested an 18 year old man linked to three residential burglaries, one business burglary, and about 12 motor vehicle break ins. He faces four burglary charges and awaits Dallas County Jail transfer. He was on parole for narcotics at arrest.

Mesquite ROTC to Admit Girls in 1973 74
Mesquite and North Mesquite High Schools will open ROTC to female students starting with the 1973-74 school year. Superintendent and Col Cooper recommended the change after a year of study, and the school board unanimously approved. Dallas area ROTC programs also admitted girls this September.

Burglars Torch Vault Stole 41000 in Stamps in Newark
In Newark New Jersey burglars used an acetylene torch to cut through a post office vault and steal 41000 worth of stamps from the Roose Ne branch. Police said the stamps ranged in value from one cent to several dollars.
