A sudden ice spell blanketed Mesquite causing 44 investigated crashes in two hours on busy IH 20 IH 30 routes and interchanges. Patrol Capt Hass led 18 units aided by sand spreaders as overpasses were blocked and warnings broadcast. One major crash at IH 30 IH 635 left three people injured. others suffered minor injuries. The cold spell ended by 1 p.m. with temps rising above freezing.

Mesquite and about 39 000 other local governments will receive the first revenue sharing checks totaling 2.6 million dollars nationwide. Mesquite’s six month 1972 payment is 327 897 dollars, boosting its 8.1 million dollar 1972 73 budget though concrete plans are not yet set. The payments continue quarterly for four years until 30.2 billion dollars are returned to governments. Only one locality declined the funds citing debt avoidance.
