Reports from Phnom Penh and UPI cite uncertainty over casualties after a disastrous American airstrike at Neak Luong. Cambodian sources estimate about 100 dead and 300 wounded as investigators seek exact figures amid widespread rubble and confusion.
Mesquite City Council approves reconstructing the Sandy Lane segment from Hickory Tree Rd west to Powell Rd at an estimated 48000 dollars. The city will cover 85 percent of costs while property owners pay 15 percent with a $1.50 credit per frontage foot for curb and gutter, reducing owner cost to 3.50 per foot. The move aims to spur similar paving projects in the area.
Harold Dean Baggett 40 of Maud was charged in Balch Springs with homicide with a motor vehicle after a July 25 hit and run killed 14-year-old Lyceria Ann Conner walking with a companion. Police said an informant placed the pickup driver in Bowie County. Baggett was arrested there and held at Dallas County jail on $35,000 bond.
Local police report the Mesquite residence of the late Bill and Mrs Hensley at 2316 Borman was burglarized between last Thursday and Monday. The couple, owners of JB's Hardware and Garland Center, were killed a week earlier in a private plane crash after takeoff from the old Kansas City Airport. Relatives found the front door forced and contents of the home disturbed, with about $90 missing and a coin collection unvalued. Police seek clues in the burglary case.
A 16 year old Mesquite girl, Raqnell Dawson, was struck Saturday evening in the Hillcrest area when a car backed from a parking space into her. She underwent five hours of skin graft surgery at Parkland Hospital on Monday and will remain hospitalized around six weeks. The driver was Lena Mallard Cates, a Hillcrest Apartments resident.
Mesquite City Council honored three former Planning Commission members at Monday’s meeting. Mayor Bob Beard presented service plaques to Bobby Joe Anderson who chaired the commission from April 1961 to May 1973, Jack Gibbons who served from May 1967 to May 1973, and Dr. Vernon Drummond who served from May 1968 to May 1973. Beard praised their time and efforts in serving citizens.
Mesquite names twelve to the new Mesquite Citizens Traffic Safety Advisory Commission with six at large posts to be filled later. City Manager Bill York says the panel aligns with federal traffic safety program while improving local oversight. Morrison Illinois automobile dealer Schuler and his son Mark, 13, depart Monday for a 1000 mile journey in a 1914 ige tourime sedan. Schuler says no records. plans to drive from Dallas to preview at speed near 40 mph and cover about 200 miles a day.
