Commandos abduct Shiite militia leader Mustafa Dirani
Israeli commandos in Lebanon seized Mustafa Dirani, head of the Believers Resistance, from Qasr Naba in the Bekaa Valley and brought him to Israel. Dirani, 46, led a group that captured Israeli navigator Ron Arad in 1986, a move seen as a bargaining chip for Arad’s release. A prior July 1989 abduction targeted Sheik Abdul-Karim Obeid to press for missing servicemen. In Gaza, Islamic militants killed two Israeli soldiers at Erez crossing and slipped into the autonomy zone, prompting Rabin to seal borders and Palestinian authorities to tighten police control.
