Hantavirus name to be changed as Navajo worries rise
The CDC will seek a nonoffensive virus name after the Navajo Nation Council asked that Muerto Canyon be dropped. CDC spokesman Bob Howard says the virus will not bear a name that offends any group, with the official naming to wait until a 1996 conference. The illness has killed at least 42 people across 18 states, including Arizona, and Muerto Canyon was favored due to location near an early victim.
