Sexually transmitted diseases highest in South
Southern states report the nation’s top rates of non AIDS sexually transmitted diseases. The CDC says the epidemic costs over 5 billion dollars annually. In 1992 many southern states exceeded 10 cases per 100,000 for syphilis and gonorrhea, with Georgia at 500.5 per 100,000 amid 4 million new cases yearly. Both overall declines since 1990 but persist in the South and among black and adolescent groups.
